🖌️From figurative to abstraction
After moving his base to New York in 1955, Inokuma’s artistic style underwent a major transformation, shifting from figurative painting to abstraction. His work continued to evolve throughout his years in the United States.
At first glance, the works he created shortly after arriving in the United States appear abstract, but traces of recognizable objects can still be found in their titles and imagery (Image 1&2).
By the following year, however, recognizable forms had completely disappeared. Instead, Inokuma began creating abstract forms centered on abstract concepts, primarily using monochromatic tones (Image 3).
Gradually, more colors were introduced, while he also experimented with building up and roughening the paint to create variations in the texture of surface—another distinctive feature of his work during this period.
Ten years after moving to the United States, Inokuma began using acrylic paint. Around this time, he began covering the canvas with short, fine lines, creating works that explored the theme of “confusion and order” of the city (Image 4).
Later, as areas of blank space gradually emerged from the once densely filled compositions, Inokuma began to express the “landscape” of the “city” in abstract terms through clean, simplified compositions of horizontal and vertical lines.
