Zen Foto Gallery Zen Foto Gallery is a photography gallery and a publisher specializes in Asian photography.

Zen Foto Gallery opened in September 2009 in Tokyo, to specialize in Asian photography with a particular emphasis on China. Our aims are: to show interesting exhibitions, to be experimental, to provide stimulating works that would otherwise be rarely seen and to introduce innovative young photographers. In all we hope to provide a forum for greater appreciation of contemporary and historical works of Asian photography. ASIAN PHOTOGRAPHY Zen Foto aims to be a bridge between Japan and China and a platform for the best of classic and contemporary photography from both countries. So far our exhibitions have included leading Chinese photographers Liu Zheng, Wang Ningde, RongRong & Inri, Moyi and Yang Yankang, and younger up-and-coming artists such as Muge, Liu Ke, Han Chao and 223. Among Japanese artists we have held exhibitions by Nobuyoshi Araki, Kazuo Kitai, Mao Ishikawa, Seiryu Inoue, vintage works by Ihei Kimura, Kanbei Hanaya and Iwata Nakayama. Younger Japanese photographers we have shown include Takehiko Nakafuji, Kazuyoshi Usui, Tatsuya Shimohira, Daisuke Ito and Masayuki Nakaya. LIMITED EDITION PHOTOGRAPHY BOOKS Along with most exhibitions, we publish limited edition photography books, producing a resource for enthusiasts of contemporary Japanese and Chinese photography. Our publications to date include "Kazuo Kitai in China, 1973" (Kazuo Kitai, 2010), "Life in Philly" (Mao Ishikawa, 2010), "Night Crawler 1995, 2010" (Takahiko Nakafuji, 2011), and joint publication with Taka Ishii Gallery of "The Theater of Love" (Nobuyoshi Araki, 2011). RARE CLASSIC JAPANESE PHOTOGRAPHY We also offer some of the rare secondhand classic Japanese photography books and vintage prints of Ihei Kimura, Seiryu Inoue, Iwata Nakayama and so forth.

Zen Foto Gallery is pleased to announce its return to Paris Photo, held Wednesday, November 11th to Sunday, November 15th, 2026 at the Grand Palais, Paris.

Following its debut at Paris Photo in 2025 with Love of Shadows — Two Women’s Stories, Zen Foto Gallery returns for its second participation with a broader presentation bringing together six photographers whose work explores memory, history, identity, and lived experience across East Asia. Titled Photography as Witness, the presentation considers the ways photographers bear witness to moments of political upheaval, cultural transformation, intimate relationships, and everyday life.

Together, these six bodies of work demonstrate photography’s ability to bear witness to history, cultural change, and the intimate realities of individual lives. Photography as Witness reflects Zen Foto Gallery’s ongoing commitment to presenting distinctive voices in Asian photography and exploring the medium’s capacity to preserve both personal and collective memory.

A guided tour of Zen Foto Gallery’s booth with photography critic Kenji Takazawa will be held on November 13 (Fri) from 16:00 to 17:00.

本展では、色の空間をテーマに、色面と自身の身体の境界線と向き合い、その共振を探る新作を中心に、和紙による大判プリント9点を展示します。

Zen Foto Gallery Tokyo is pleased to present “The Body Lurking Within Color,” a solo exhibition by Tokyo Rumando, opening tomorrow, October 2.

The exhibition explores color as a spatial environment, examining the boundary between fields of color and the artist’s own body. Nine large-format works printed on Japanese washi will be on view.

“Between the seemingly contradictory states of ‘definite presence’ and ‘lurking,’ time and memory, emotions and thoughts, and the choices I have made continue to circulate.”

Zen Foto Gallery is pleased to present ”The Body Lurking Within Color,” a solo exhibition by photographer Tokyo Rumando, from Friday, October 2 through Saturday, October 31, and again from Tuesday, November 24 through Saturday, December 19, 2026.
Marking Tokyo Rumando’s first solo exhibition at Zen Foto Gallery in five years, the exhibition celebrates the publication of her 2024 photobook ‘Paris Iridescent’, published by Zen Foto Gallery. The exhibition will feature nine carefully selected works presented as large-format prints on Japanese washi paper.
On Saturday, October 3, Zen Foto Gallery director Mark Pearson will be in conversation with Tokyo Rumando for an artist talk event. We warmly invite you to join us.
