Best known for his eye-popping ceiling frescos featuring mythological scenes, Giovanni Battista Tiepolo (1696-1770) also had a more down-to-earth side. This small drawing reflects his interest in caricature, perhaps an antidote to the pompous allegories that occupied most of his time.

Detail of Hellmouth illumination
The Munich Psalter,
c. 1200–1210.
Oxford, England.
A detailed detail from the Last Judgment scene. The medieval artist vividly depicts a horned demon carrying a woven basket tightly packed with the souls of the damned. The expressive faces of the sinners capture a profound sense of terror, despair, and grief as they are led to eternal torment.
Location: Bayerische Staatsbibliothek (Munich, Germany), Clm 835, fol. 30v.

Georgia O’Keeffe 'Red Canna' (1924) Oil on canvas (29.0 in × 18.0 in) — Modernist color study

"I found that I could say things with color and shapes that I couldn’t say in any other way things that I had no words for." — Georgia O’Keeffe

✨ Visual & structural analysis:

Radiance & chromatic scale: Expanding a single blossom across a 29×18 inch canvas, O’Keeffe transforms the internal folds of the red canna into sweeping fields of vibrant crimson, scarlet, and subtle orange transitions.

Spatial enclosure & flow: By magnifying the subject past the picture plane, the composition strips away background context to focus purely on organic geometry, movement, and form.
