“The technique of 'weaving' has, originally, answered the fundamental need to create forms for a wide range of everyday purposes using only simple tools. It is the result of generations of accumulated technical wisdom and is a repository of ideas for bringing diverse forms. Around the world today, many contemporary creators base their practice on the fascination of rediscovering, from their own individual perspectives, the universal formal possibilities that lie at the heart of this tradition.”
(Excerpt from Sekijima Hisako’s text (Japanese), "Points of Contact Between Folk Tools and Contemporary Basketry Seen in the Technique of 'Weaving' II," published in the exhibition booklet (Japanese) for “Resilient Materials, Versatile Thinking,” Musashino Art University Museum & Library.)
