さいたま市立中学校の職場体験事業「未来くるワーク体験」において、3日間にわたり大宮盆栽美術館で過ごした植竹中学校の生徒２人による、お気に入りの盆栽とコメントを紹介します。

タイトル：黒松の姿形
盆栽と聞き最初に思い浮かべる代表的な盆栽の「松」。その力強い幹の姿や綺麗に整った葉の形、背景の水や石とあわさって、大自然の迫力ある姿はとても素晴らしいものだと思います。この盆栽を裏面からみると、正面とは違う景色が見られるところが魅力です。いろいろな種類の盆栽や形があり、同じ盆栽でも見方や場所によって見え方が違うところが盆栽の楽しみの一つだと思います。

We are pleased to introduce photos and comments from two students of Uetake Junior High School, who spent three days at the Omiya Bonsai Art Museum as part of Saitama City’s workplace experience program “Mirakuru Work Experience.”
Title: The Form and Appearance of Black Pine
When I hear the word “bonsai,” the first thing that comes to mind is the classic “pine” bonsai. I find the powerful form of its trunk, the beautifully shaped foliage, and the way it blends with the water and stones in the background to create a powerful image of nature truly magnificent. One of the charms of this bonsai is that when viewed from the back, it reveals a different perspective than when seen from the front. There are many different types and shapes of bonsai, and I believe one of the joys of bonsai is that even the same tree can look different depending on how and from where you view it.

タイトル：花梨の生き様
花梨は幹が他と違い白っぽいような灰色で、葉の色は薄めの緑から黄色に近い色です。
わたしが想像していた黒松の様な盆栽ではなく、きれいでしなやかな、やさしい雰囲気の盆栽です。背はあまり高くないですが、下から見上げた時の迫力はほかの盆栽と比べても全く劣っていないと思います。やさしい雰囲気がありながらも迫力を兼ね備えたとても美しい盆栽だと感じます。

Title: The Life of the Karin Tree
The Karin tree has a trunk that’s a whitish-gray color—unlike other trees—and its leaves range from a pale green to a shade close to yellow.
It’s not the kind of bonsai I have imagined—like a black pine—but rather a beautiful, graceful bonsai with a gentle aura. Although it isn’t very tall, I think the sense of grandeur you feel when looking up at it from below is in no way inferior to that of other bonsai. I find it to be a truly beautiful bonsai that combines a gentle atmosphere with a sense of grandeur.

This beautiful Korean spindle tree bonsai was on display in our lobby this past week. You can feel the start of autumn in its little berries opening to drop its seeds. It will be on display in the So-style room this week (9/18-9/23)!

This piece is planted in a pot with a bat motif. If you’re from the west like me, you might be a little surprised to see a bats on something like this! 🦇

Bats are actually considered a symbol of good luck and blessings in East Asia. It is not too uncommon to see them depicted in different types of traditional art in Japan.

As an American, I think it is especially fitting for this piece to be on display now as Halloween is getting closer 😆🎃🍂

この美しい吊り花盆栽は先週当館のロビーで展示されました。実が開き種を見せていることから秋の始まりが感じられる作品だなと思いました。※9/18～9/23はお座敷の草の間に展示されます！

また、鉢にコウモリのモチーフが描かれていますね🦇

アメリカ人のわたしにとってはちょっと意外だなと思いました！なぜかというと多くの西洋の人にとってコウモリは「怖い」「汚い」というイメージがあるからです。コウモリは縁起がいいと日本で言われていることがわかってとっても興味深いと思いました。

これからハロウィンの季節に入るので、このモチーフはより一層今の季節にぴったりですよね😆🎃🍂

2025年、大宮盆栽美術館に隣接する大宮盆栽村は、開村100周年を迎えました。

これを記念してさまざまなイベントが開催されたほか、『これまでの100年、これからの100年 : 大宮盆栽村開村100周年記念誌』と題した記念誌が大宮盆栽村開村100周年記念式典等実行委員会により制作されました。

この出版物は、国立国会図書館に所蔵され、最近、同館の785/786号（2026年9/10月）『月報』で紹介されました！ぜひ、こちらのリンクからお読みください： https://www.ndl.go.jp/publication/geppo

この出版物は非売品でありますが、大宮盆栽村の歴史を保存し、その情報をより広く発信してくださった国立国会図書館に深く感謝いたします。

In 2025, Omiya Bonsai Village, which neighbors the Omiya Bonsai Art Museum, welcomed its 100th anniversary. Many different events were held in celebration, and a commemorative book was also created titled, The Past 100 Years, The Next 100 Years:100th Anniversary Commemorative Book of Omiya Bonsai Village.

This publication was added to the National Diet Library, Japan and was recently featured in their 2026 Sept./Oct. Monthly Bulletin! You can read the article here: https://www.ndl.go.jp/publication/geppo (available in Japanese only).

This publication is not for sale, so we are grateful to the National Diet Library for helping preserve the history of Omiya Bonsai Village, as well as making information about it more widely available.

皆さんはこの盆栽を見たときどのように感じましたか？
私はこの盆栽を初めて見たとき根まで生えた苔が芝生のようで平原の中に一本の巨大な木があり、木陰で人や動物が休んでいるそんな景色を想像しました。そのように盆栽は、いろいろな見方をすることができます。
ぜひみなさんも大宮盆栽美術館にきていろいろな方向から盆栽を観察してみてください。

"If you look at a small bonsai from below, it will suddenly change into a giant tree."
When you looked at this bonsai, how did you feel?
When I first saw this bonsai, the moss growing down to the roots was like a field and it was like a giant tree in a plain. I imagined a scene where people and animals were relaxing in the tree shade. Like that, there are a lot of ways you can look at bonsai. Please come to the Omiya Bonsai Art Museum and try observing the bonsai from various directions.

Have you ever actually seen a bonsai that has lived for 1000 years? Bonsai that have lived for 1000 years have power. Todoroki in the Omiya Bonsai Art Museum has thick roots that support its big trunk. The trunk has a cavity filled with a 1000-year long history. Also, the branches have a power that grows rapidly. 皆さんは「盆石」というものを知っていますか？私がこの作品を最初に見たとき、今にも川の流れる音が聞こえてきそうだなと思いました。盆石を鑑賞する際には、座敷に上がり、座って45度の角度から見るといいそうです。盆石は様々な大きさの白い砂を使い、ハクチョウの羽を使って模様を描きます。この作品の模様は川の流れを繊細に、美しく表現しています。さらに、散らしてある扇が作品を華やかに彩っています。ぜひ、盆石「瀬音」を見に大宮盆栽美術館にお越しください。

Title: The Sound of Water ～Drawing Nature～
Do you know "bonseki"? When I first saw this piece, I thought in that moment that I could hear the sound of a flowing river. When appreciating bonseki, it is best that you enter the zashiki room, sit down, and look at it from a 45 degree angle. Bonseki uses various sizes of white sand, and patterns are drawn using a swan's feather. The pattern of this piece delicately and beautifully depicts a flowing river. The folding fans spread around color the piece brilliantly. Please come to the Omiya Bonsai Art Museum to see the bonseki "The Sound of Water."
