後智仁の3回目となる個展「Welcome to The Country」が、MAKI Gallery / 天王洲にて開催中です。

キャラクターや広告、写真、絵画といった多様な視覚情報は、鮮明な形態を保つものから、時間とともに曖昧な印象へと変化するものまで様々です。40点近くの新作群によって構成される本展では、この記憶のメカニズムが多角的に展開されます。平面作品においては、具体的なイメージを直線的な構成へと還元することで、その意味や役割が揺らぎ、新たな視覚的秩序が立ち上がります。これらの作品はすべてキャンバスにアクリルで描かれ、曲線から点を削減するプロセスを通じて、イメージの変容過程そのものを提示しています。

“Welcome to The Country,” Japanese artist Tomohito Ushiro’s third solo exhibition, is currently on view at MAKI Gallery / Tennoz, Tokyo.

Visual information—ranging from characters and advertisements to photographs and paintings—exists in varying states, from vividly preserved forms to impressions that have gradually dissolved into ambiguity over time. Comprising close to 40 new works, the exhibition presents a multifaceted exploration of these mechanisms of memory. In Ushiro’s paintings, representational imagery is reduced into linear compositions, destabilizing its original meaning and function while giving rise to a new visual order. Executed in acrylic on canvas, these works foreground the very process of transformation by systematically reducing points along curved forms.

多田圭佑がポルトガルのアートフェアARCOlisboaに参加
Keisuke Tada exhibiting in ARCOlisboa, Lisbon [English below↓]

多田圭佑が、5/28（木）よりポルトガル・リスボンで開催されるアートフェアARCOlisboaにて「残欠の絵画」シリーズの新作を発表いたします。ロンドンを拠点とするギャラリーChilliが手がける、Ruth Speerとの2人展として出品される本シリーズは、3DCGによって生成された架空の風景を描いた絵画に意図的なエイジング加工を施し、表面に人工的なひび割れを生み出しています。観る者の知覚を揺さぶるために、質感やイメージ、スケールを緻密に調整し、多田は現実をもはや「ある」「ない」の二元論ではなく、移ろい続ける回路の連続体であることを示唆する、形而上学的な試みとして成立させています。

New works from Keisuke Tada’s ongoing “Paintings of incomplete remans” series are on view at ARCOlisboa, the art fair opening May 28 in Lisbon, Portugal. Exhibited as part of a duo presentation with Ruth Speer organized by London-based gallery Chilli, Tada’s paintings depict fictional, CGI-generated environments on material surface, deliberately aged to produce a faux craquelure. Texture, image, and scale are carefully calibrated to destabilize perception, constituting a metaphysical exercise that suggests reality is no longer a binary of being and not being, but a shifting continuum of interconnected passages.

“Welcome to The Country,” a solo exhibition by Japanese artist Tomohito Ushiro, opens tomorrow at MAKI Gallery / Tennoz, Tokyo.

Ushiro’s practice is deeply rooted in the structure of memory. The visual information he has accumulated—ranging from characters and advertisements to photographs and paintings—exists in varying states, from vividly preserved forms to impressions that have gradually dissolved into ambiguity over time. By actively manipulating these conditions of memory, Ushiro investigates how such accumulated imagery shapes one’s sense of self.

The artist will be present at the gallery on Saturday, May 9 with an opening reception between 5 – 7 pm. We look forward to seeing you there!

このたび MAKI Gallery は、後智仁による個展「Welcome to The Country」を天王洲ギャラリーにて開催いたします。

タイトル「Welcome to The Country」は、近年作家が抱き続けてきた「国とは何か」という問いに由来しています。外部に存在する制度なのか、それとも個人の内面に形成される観念なのか。そうした思考の中で後は、1960年代に広告によって創出された架空の国家「Marlboro Country」に着目します。ライフスタイルを提示することで人々の帰属意識を喚起したそのイメージは、やがて社会的価値の変化とともに揺らぎ、作家に「信じること」の本質を問い返す契機となりました。

本展において提示されるイメージは、こうした記憶と信念の構造を背景に、具象と抽象、現実と虚構の境界を横断します。後智仁の作品は、私たちが拠って立つ「イメージの正しさ」や「信じる対象」の不確かさを静かに問いかけ、鑑賞者に新たな知覚の回路を開くことでしょう。

MAKI Gallery is pleased to present “Welcome to The Country,” a solo exhibition by Japanese artist Tomohito Ushiro, at Tennoz, Tokyo.

The exhibition title originates from the artist’s ongoing inquiry into the notion of “country.” Is it something external, defined by systems and borders, or an internal construct shaped by perception and belief? In this context, Ushiro reflects on “Marlboro Country,” a fictional nation created through advertising in the 1960s, which profoundly influenced him during his formative years. While it once functioned as a powerful symbol of aspiration and identity, its eventual decline exposed the instability of the values it embodied, prompting the artist to question the very nature of belief.

The works presented in this exhibition traverse the boundaries between figuration and abstraction, reality and fiction, interiority and external structure. Through these investigations, Ushiro quietly interrogates the uncertainty of what we perceive as truth and the foundations of what we choose to believe, inviting viewers to reconsider their own modes of perception.

The artist will be present at the gallery on Saturday, May 9 with an opening reception between 5 – 7 pm. We look forward to seeing you there!

田村琢郎新オープンのJINS新宿店で作品展示中
Takuro Tamura’s work on view at the newly opened JINS Shinjuku [English below↓]

アイウエアブランドのJINSが4月23日（木）にオープンした世界最大の旗艦店「JINS新宿店」にて、MAKI Gallery所属作家・田村琢郎による2点の立体新作が公開展示されています。

エントランス付近に設置されている「Untitled」は、アスファルトを球体にし、どこにでも転がっていける自由や利便性を示しながらも、表面には動きを制限する道路標識が書き込まれています。さらにガードレールで囲われた様は‘思い通りに動けない矛盾した状況’を示唆しています。

店内には、田村の代表的なLoversシリーズの新作「Tax and Lovers」が展示されています。JINSのロゴをあしらった支柱から多方面へ向くカーブミラーが無数に伸びており、それらは本来の役割を放棄してお互いを見つめ合うことで、複雑な合わせ鏡を作り出しています。田村はこの作品を「複雑に交差する新宿の視線や想いを抽出して構想した」と語ります。

Two new sculptures by MAKI Gallery artist Takuro Tamura are on public view at JINS Shinjuku, the newly opened flagship store of the Japanese eyewear brand.

Installed next to the entrance, “Untitled” features asphalt in a spherical form, symbolizing the potential to roll freely in any direction. However, the restrictive road markings on its surface and surrounding guardrails contradict this promise of mobility, as if to embody the confused frustration of not being able to move as desired, whether literally or figuratively.

On display inside the store is "Tax and Lovers," a new addition to Tamura's signature Lovers series. An array of traffic mirrors extends in various directions from a pole adorned with the JINS logo. Face-to-face, as if staring into each other’s non-existent eyes, the mirrors forsake their original function to create an intricate web of infinite reflections. The work emerges from the intersecting gazes and emotions that circulate daily through the city of Shinjuku.
