Robert Rauschenberg’s Cardbird Series is a significant series of prints produced in 1971. Rauschenberg became interested in discarded cardboard boxes found on the streets and developed his Cardboards works, using the cardboard itself as a support. Based on this approach, the Cardbirds incorporate the creases, tears, tape, staples, stains, and labels found on used cardboard boxes, reproducing these traces through photo-offset lithography and screenprinting. Although the works appear at first glance to be actual discarded cardboard boxes, they are in fact images reconstructed through printmaking, creating an ambiguity between reality and representation that is characteristic of Rauschenberg’s practice. Cardbird I–VII were produced in an edition of 75 and exemplify the artist’s approach of transforming ordinary and discarded materials into works of art.

Robert Rauschenberg (1925–2008) was one of the leading American artists of the 20th century, known for expanding the boundaries of art by moving freely between painting, sculpture, photography, and found objects. In the 1950s, he developed his distinctive “Combines,” incorporating newspapers, photographs, discarded materials, and everyday objects into his paintings, thereby bringing art into direct dialogue with everyday life. During the 1960s, he increasingly incorporated images drawn from the media and contemporary society into his work, reflecting the events and culture of his time.

Created in 1970, Signs is one of his most significant works. Produced as a screenprint, it condenses the social and cultural upheavals of the 1960s into a single composition. Layered images evoke figures and events including John F. Kennedy, Robert F. Kennedy, Martin Luther King Jr., astronauts, the Vietnam War, demonstrations, and popular culture. By combining these images from photographs and the mass media, Rauschenberg explored the collective memory of a turbulent era and the overwhelming flow of information that shaped contemporary society. Signs is therefore an important work that examines how memory and our perception of history are constructed through images circulating in the media.

Bernd Becher (1931–2007) and Hilla Becher (1934–2015) were a German photographic couple who established an international reputation through their systematic black-and-white photographs of industrial architecture. Beginning in the late 1950s, they photographed coal mines, blast furnaces, water towers, gas tanks, and other industrial structures that were threatened with closure or demolition. Using frontal compositions and uniform lighting conditions, they developed a method known as “typology,” in which similar structures were arranged side by side to reveal their formal similarities and differences. By presenting these industrial structures as “anonymous sculptures,” their work had a profound influence on the later Düsseldorf School of Photography.

Siegener Strasse is associated with the Bechers’ early series Fachwerkhäuser des Siegener Industriegebietes, photographed around their hometown of Siegen between 1959 and 1978. The series documents the timber-framed houses characteristic of the Siegen region, photographed from different elevations and viewpoints, including the street-facing, gabled, and rear sides. Rather than simply recording individual buildings, the Bechers made their common structures and subtle differences comparable through systematic photography. The series represents an important early example of the typological approach that would later define their practice.

Ben Nicholson (1894–1982), one of the leading figures in 20th-century British abstract art, developed his distinctive abstract language under the influence of Cubism and Neo-Plasticism. His encounter with the naïve painter Alfred Wallis, as well as his exchanges with artists such as Piet Mondrian and Jean Arp, played an important role in his artistic development. He went on to create works such as the White Reliefs, in which geometric forms are carved into white panels, establishing his international reputation. From 1939 onward, he was based in St Ives, where he became a leading figure in the development of the postwar British avant-garde.
This work was created in 1981, the year before Nicholson’s death, at his home in London, and is among his final works. The title, Lugano, refers to the town in southern Switzerland where Nicholson lived with his first wife in the 1920s and again from 1958 to 1971. Rather than depicting the place directly, the work can be understood as an evocation of his experiences and memories of Lugano. The still-life motifs of a pitcher, mug, and goblet are reduced to the picture plane through delicate outlines, while the pale gray ground and dark gray band along the upper edge create an ambiguous space in which the tabletop still life and the landscape of the lakeside appear to overlap.

Atsuko TANAKA (1932–2005) is one of the leading avant-garde artists of postwar Japan, who has earned high international acclaim as a central member of the Gutai Art Association. After withdrawing from Kyoto City College of Fine Arts (now Kyoto City University of Arts) in 1951, she studied at the Art Institute of Osaka City Museum of Fine Arts. In the early 1950s she joined the avant-garde group Zero-kai (Zero Society) alongside Akira KANAYAMA, Kazuo SHIRAGA and Saburo MURAKAMI. An early landmark, Bell (1955), was an installation in which electric bells strung throughout the exhibition space rang out in sequence, a pioneering attempt to incorporate sound, time and space as constituent elements of the work.

This circular painting, created in 1991, is representative of Atsuko Tanaka’s late period. Painted in synthetic enamel on canvas mounted on a wooden panel 90 cm in diameter, it presents concentric rings of red, green, yellow and blue layered repeatedly over a black ground. Vividly coloured lines intertwine across the surface, converging towards the centre, while the poured paint leaves a glossy surface with a subtle sense of thickness once dry. Other works in the same format, including ‘91A and ‘91f, were produced in the same year, reflecting Tanaka’s constant exploration of the circle as a form.
