[EXHIBITION INTRODUCTION]
Birdo Space is pleased to present Ayaka TADANO’s solo exhibition, “NORTHERN LIGHTS”. Sharing her observations and reflections on the backdrop of an ever-changing world, the artist shares that with neither our everyday lives nor nature ever remaining static, we take each day at a time cherishing the moments of both joy and loss. In “Due North” (2025), her works focused on exploring her interest into the gaze and far distance of the North, examining what lies beyond, and whether the answer she has been long searching for could be found there, or moreso within herself. This introspection had brought her to Finland for an artist residency from June to August 2026. Looking beyond the picturesque scenery, she observed the spaces between people and nature, the quiet, slightly crisp air, the warmth of the earth that seemingly embraces all who visit, and most especially, the Northern Lights, visible only in this region, that softly illuminates it all. She believes that perhaps what she found was a quiet sense of harmony and shared companionship and coexistence with these elements.
For TADANO, painting a landscape is not simply about capturing what is seen before one’s eyes; it is about embracing the passage of time, the atmosphere of the place, and the authentic inner voice within. Created during her time in Finland, visitors are invited to see these observations in her works she created there: that of between humankind and nature, distant lands and the lives of those who inhabit them, of light and shadow, as well as the ever-changing and the enduring. In addition, new pieces centered on the theme of the Northern Lights she encountered will also be exhibited.
Immerse yourself in exploring TADANO’s creations — the observations, reflections, and landscapes — inspired from the Northern Lights of the Arctic.
