Tarot is Philosophy.
Tarot is Art.
Tarot is Living Culture.
At the Tokyo Tarot Museum, we see tarot as a way of listening to the voice within. As we encounter the images on the cards and follow the feelings and words they stir, we may meet wishes we had not yet noticed, or see afresh the values we had taken for granted. It is this kind of dialogue that we hold dear.
Over the centuries and across many places, tarot has been used in many ways: as a game, as art, for divination, and for reflection. Honoring this rich and varied history, we place our emphasis less on predicting the future than on meeting ourselves as we are now. The future takes shape through what we feel, what we choose, and how we act. A dialogue with tarot is a time to take up those choices as the one living our own life.
Tarot is a philosophy that invites us to rethink how we live, an art that opens the imagination, and a living culture, handed down and transformed across eras and regions. Knowing its history and cultural background lets the single card before us come alive in richer ways. And this culture continues to grow today through everyone who uses, paints, and speaks of it.
Rather than standing as those who hand out answers, we seek to create a space where each person can trust their own senses and deepen their own questions. Knowledge is there to support the dialogue, never to replace a person's own voice.
A museum, too, is more than a place that delivers finished meanings. We hope to be a place where works and people, and people and people, come together, where different perspectives meet, and where new meanings and connections naturally emerge.
More than analyzing and explaining ourselves, we value using our imagination to envision what may yet be. We give form to feelings not yet put into words, and with our own hands we shape the way we live and the society we share.
What we hope to nurture through tarot is the ability to listen both to our own voice and to the voice of the world, to think for ourselves, and to engage with the future.
