《모래와 흙》

이헌정 작가는 흙이라는 재료가 지닌 가변성과 생명성에 주목해왔다. 그는 도예를 기반으로 조각, 가구, 설치, 회화 등 다양한 형식과 스케일을 넘나들며 재료의 가능성을 확장한다. 그에게 흙은 단순히 형태를 만들어내는 재료를 넘어 끊임없이 변화하고 반응하는 물질에 가깝다. 손의 움직임과 흙의 물성이 맞물리고, 물과 불이라는 원소적 과정이 더해지며 형성되는 그의 작품은 완결된 형상이라기보다 생성과 흐름의 상태로 보인다. 이라 불리는 스툴 작품은 소성된 흙의 단단한 물성과 대비되는 유기적인 형태로, 마치 우주의 물질이나 심해의 생명체를 연상시키며 낯설면서도 친근한 감각을 만들어낸다. 기능과 조형, 물질과 공간의 경계를 넘나들며, 흙이라는 원초적 재료를 자신만의 조형 언어로 재해석하여 현대적 감각 속에서 새롭게 인식하게 한다.

Hun Chung Lee has long been attentive to the mutability and vitality inherent in soil as a material. Working from a foundation in ceramics, he expands its possibilities across sculpture, furniture, installation, and painting, moving fluidly between diverse formats and scales. For Lee, soil is not merely a medium for producing form but a living substance—one that continuously transforms and responds. His works emerge through the interplay between the movement of the hand and the materiality of clay, further shaped by elemental processes involving water and fire. As a result, they appear less as fixed, completed objects and more as states of generation and flow. His stool works titled Island present organic forms that contrast with the hardened materiality of fired clay, evoking associations with cosmic matter or deep-sea organisms and producing a sensation that feels both unfamiliar and strangely intimate. Moving between function and form, material and space, Lee reinterprets the primal material of soil through his own formal language, inviting it to be perceived anew within a contemporary sensibility.

김강용 작가는 하나의 대상을 면밀히 탐구하며 전체적 본질을 응축하여 형상화한다. 그는 ‘모래’라는 단일한 재료와 ‘벽돌’의 이미지를 중심으로 점·선·면의 치밀한 반복적 조형성을 전개하며 실재와 재현, 존재와 인식의 경계를 질문한다. 한국 극사실회화의 대표 작가인 그는 1980년대 산업화 시기의 환경 속에서 흔히 보이던 벽돌을 시각적 매개로 사회의 문제와 현실을 담아내는 것에 중점을 두었으나, 최근의 작품은 점차 구체적 맥락을 넘어 회화의 본질에 집중하고 있다. 수많은 모래알로 이루어진 화면은 섬세한 촉각적 존재감을 드러내며 선과 면을 구성하고, 평면 위에 그려진 육면체의 그림자는 구상과 추상을 넘나드는 인식의 장으로 전환된다. 그의 최근 작품은 극사실회화의 범주를 넘어서 조형 예술의 본질을 사유하는 개념적 차원으로 확장되고 있다.

Kang Yong Kim investigates a single subject with meticulous attention, condensing and shaping its essential qualities into form. Centered on the singular material of sand and the image of the brick, he develops a dense, repetitive visual language composed of points, lines, and planes, questioning the boundaries between reality and representation, and between existence and perception. Widely regarded as a leading figure in Korean hyperrealist painting, Kim initially focused on the brick—an image frequently encountered during the period of industrialization in the 1980s—as a visual device through which to reflect the social conditions and realities of the time. In his more recent work, however, his practice gradually moves beyond specific contextual references to engage more directly with the fundamental nature of painting itself. Surfaces composed of countless grains of sand reveal a delicate tactile presence, forming lines and planes, while the shadow of a cube depicted on the flat picture plane transforms the work into a perceptual field that moves between figuration and abstraction. In this sense, his recent works extend beyond the category of hyperrealist painting toward a conceptual exploration of the essence of form.

The exhibition focuses on the material qualities of “sand” and “soil,” substances that both artists have explored over an extended period of time. Originating from the earth itself, sand and soil are among the most fundamental materials—elements that have long served as both the foundation of human civilization and the point of departure for artistic practice. Each artist approaches these primal materials through distinct modes of inquiry and reflection. 두 작가의 조형적 접근 방식은 서로 다른 방향으로 전개된다. 김강용 작가가 하나의 대상을 집요하게 탐구하며 그 안에서 전체의 이치를 읽어낸다면, 이헌정 작가는 하나의 이치에 다가가기 위해 다층적인 관점과 형식을 넘나들며 탐구와 실험을 지속한다. 본 전시는 하나에서 전체로 확장되는 인식과, 전체에서 하나로 수렴하는 관점이 모래와 흙의 연결된 물성 안에서 공명하는 지점을 제시한다. 집중과 확산, 견고함과 유연함이라는 대비 속에서 관람자는 근원적이고 원초적인 재료가 지닌 감각적 층위와, 그 물질을 동시대의 조형 언어로 새롭게 전환하는 두 작가의 사유 방식을 함께 마주하게 될 것이다.

The approaches to form taken by the two artists unfold in different directions. While Kang Yong Kim persistently investigates a single subject, discerning the underlying order of the whole from within it, Hun Chung Lee continues his inquiry and experimentation by traversing multiple perspectives and forms in pursuit of an underlying principle. This exhibition proposes a point of resonance where a mode of perception that expands from the one toward the whole, and another that converges from the whole toward the one, meet within the interconnected materiality of sand and soil. Within the tension between concentration and diffusion, solidity and flexibility, viewers encounter both the sensory layers inherent in these elemental materials and the distinct ways in which the two artists translate them into a contemporary formal language.
