nook gallery는 평창동에 위치한 전시공간입니다.
규칙과 틀에 얽매이지 않는 유연함 속에서 현대 미술의 여러 장르를 아우르는 전시를 만들어 갑니다. 성격이 다르면서도 공감대를 가질 수 있는 평면작품과 입체작품이 한 공간에서 만나는 2인 전시를 통해 서로 다른 이미지가 상생할 수 있는 실험적인 전시를 기획합니다. 일 년에 한 두 번은 꾸준히 작업을 해왔으나 전시 기회가 상대적으로 적은 역량 있는 작가를 위한 후원전시를 가집니다.
작가가 전시를 만드는 것이 아니라 관람자가 작품 속에서 자신의 이야기를 풀어갈 수 있는 전시공간을 만들어 가려 합니다.

생식드로잉은 한 마리를 그리는 데 적용되는 ‘최저시급’을 기준으로 가격이 책정되며, 10,000원, 19,000원, 28,000원의 할인 단계로 나뉜다. 그러나 짝짓기 장면부터는 새끼의 발생 가능성이 포함되기 때문에 할인이 적용되지 않고 40,000원으로 책정된다. 다만 캐시미어 고트의 경우 털의 가치까지 고려해 39,000원으로 조정되었다.
이러한 기준으로 산출된 총합은 약 15만 원에 이르며, 실제 갤러리 판매 가격과의 차이가 무엇인지 질문을 던지는 작업이다. 그 차이는 창작에 부여되는 개념적 가치일 수도 있고, 갤러리나 미술시장, 혹은 사회적 구조와 계층이 만들어낸 결과일 수도 있다. 작업은 이에 대한 단일한 해답을 제시하기보다, 그 간극 자체를 드러내고 사유하도록 유도한다.

Reproductive Drawing is based on a pricing system derived from a “minimum wage” applied to drawing a single animal, with discounted tiers set at 10,000, 19,000, and 28,000 KRW. However, from the point at which mating is depicted, the possibility of offspring is introduced, and no discount is applied, fixing the price at 40,000 KRW. In the case of the cashmere goat, the value of its fur is additionally considered, resulting in an adjusted price of 39,000 KRW.
The total calculated amount reaches approximately 150,000 KRW, and the work raises the question of what accounts for the gap between this sum and the actual gallery sale price. This difference may lie in the conceptual value attributed to creation, or in the structures produced by galleries, the art market, or broader social hierarchies. Rather than presenting a definitive answer, the work foregrounds this gap itself as a space for reflection.

일상의 공간을 고정되지 않은 지각으로 바라보며 우연히 시선이 닿은 장면을 그린다. 실내 사물과 외부 풍경이 이동과 반사로 변형되어 화면 안에서 색면의 구조로 재구성된다. 이미지는 중첩된 시선, 흐려진 경계와 움직임이 조율된 공간으로 드러난다. 일상을 인식하는 지각의 조건들에 관심이 있다. 이러한 조건들은 작고 사소한 순간에 나타나 풍경에 변화를 일으킨다. 그때 포 착된 것들을 그림에 담는다.

The work begins by observing everyday spaces through an unfixed mode of perception, capturing moments where the gaze happens to land. Interior objects and exterior landscapes are transformed through movement and reflection, and are reconstructed within the frame as structures of color planes. The image emerges as a space where layered viewpoints, blurred boundaries, and movement are carefully modulated.
I am interested in the conditions of perception through which we recognize the everyday. These conditions reveal themselves in small, seemingly insignificant moments, subtly altering the landscape. What is captured in those instances is translated into painting.

사운드워크는 예술노동이 분명히 투입되었음에도 그에 대한 보상이 일부이거나, 때로는 전혀 회수되지 않는 상황을 ‘도어노크’라는 장치를 통해 사물화한 작업이다. 문을 두드리는 행위는 즉각적으로 가시적인 결과를 드러내기보다, 진동과 소리의 형태로 시간을 두고 전달된다. 그리고 누군가가 그 신호를 받아 문을 열기까지의 시간차는, 예술노동이 다시 에너지로 환원되어 돌아오는 지연된 과정을 은유한다.
여기에 청설모의 이미지를 겹쳐, 호두를 얻기 위해 반복적으로 자신의 일을 수행하는 모습과, 외부의 개입으로 문이 열리는 순간을 병치했다. 이는 미술이 지닌 비가시적이면서도 지속적으로 사람을 끌어당기는 힘—시간을 경유해 작동하는 느슨하지만 집요한 영향력—을 함께 드러낸다.

Sound Work stages a condition in which artistic labor is intensely invested, yet only partially—if at all—returned. This dynamic is articulated through the motif of a “door knock.” The act produces no immediate visible outcome; instead, it persists as vibration and sound over time. The interval between the knock and the opening of the door becomes a metaphor for the lag through which the energy of artistic labor is eventually returned.
Layered onto this is the image of a squirrel persistently pursuing a walnut, while the door opens through the intervention of an “other.” This juxtaposition foregrounds a peculiar force within art: an invisible yet enduring pull that draws people in over time—a loose, delayed, yet tenacious form of influence.

인물작업은 평범한 주변인들이다. 놀랄만한 사건도 거대한 서사도 존재하지 않는다. 겹겹이 쌓인 일상 중 한 장면일 뿐이다. 그들은 여전히 물리적으로 존재하지만 그 찰나 속에 인물은 영원히 돌아오지 않는다. 돌아 올 수 없고 다시 볼 수 없는 이에게 해줄 수 있는 건 기억하는 것이다.
풍경과 인물 작업은 완성에 가까워질수록 붓질, 색, 면, 선은 유동적으로 변하고, 그 과정에서 그림은 스스로의 질서를 만들어 나간다. 하지만 모든 작업이 동일한 방식으로 흘러가지는 않는다. 어떤 그림은 재현에 가까운 상태로 남고, 어떤 그림은 재현을 벗어난 흐름선에서 끝난다. 이처럼 작업의 결과 또한 유동적이며, 각각의 그림은 스스로에게 필요한 방식으로 완성된다. ----범진용 작가노트 중에서

The figures in the work are ordinary people from everyday life. There are no astonishing events or grand narratives—only a single moment layered within the accumulation of daily existence. Though they continue to exist physically, the figure within that fleeting instant never returns. What cannot return, what cannot be seen again—what we can offer is remembrance.
As the landscape and figure paintings approach completion, brushstrokes, colors, planes, and lines shift fluidly, and in that process, the painting begins to form its own internal order. However, not all works unfold in the same way. Some remain close to representation, while others conclude along a trajectory that departs from it. In this way, the outcomes themselves remain fluid, and each painting arrives at its own necessary form of completion.

먼지 아래의 바닥은 깨끗하다

우리는 일상의 표면을 통해 세계를 바라본다. 장면들은 그 위를 스쳐 지나간다. 문득 사소한 흔적 하나가 공간을 달라 보이게 한다.
산책의 길목마다 들풀이 뒤엉켜 자라 있다. 주변인들의 모습과 주위의 소음들, 수북하게 쌓인 잔재들이 공기 중에 몸을 스친다.
공간의 온습도를 머금은 김이 서린 듯한 표면에, 실루엣의 부피와 무게를 안쪽의 선으로 덜어낸다. 버려진 껍질 안쪽의 굴곡을 따라 날벌레들의 비행길이 휘어진다.
성에가 얹힌 버스 창밖으로 정차된 차 위에 석양이 비친다. 성에와 부딪히며 새어나오는 빛과 그림자로 인해 공간의 색이 흩어진다.
이어진 것 같던 시간을 구간으로 잘라보면 많은 것이 변해 있다. 우리의 시선과 시간 감각도 조금씩 달라지고 있었을 것이다. 표면은 시간을 담은 층이 된다.
먼지가 아무리 두껍게 쌓여 있어도 바닥은 사실 깨끗하다. 그 위로 쌓인 시간과 흔적들이 공간의 새로운 얼굴을 드러낸다.

Beneath the Dust

We perceive the world through the surface of the everyday. Scenes pass lightly across it. At times, a trivial trace can suddenly make a space appear different.
At every turn along a walk, wild grasses grow in tangled clusters. The figures of those around us, the surrounding noises, and the piled-up remnants brush against the body in the air.
On a surface that seems to hold the temperature and humidity of the space—like a fogged film—the volume and weight of silhouettes are eased inward into lines. Along the inner curves of discarded shells, the flight paths of tiny insects bend and waver.
Through the frosted window of a bus, the setting sun reflects off a stationary car outside. As it collides with the frost, the escaping light and shadow scatter the colors of the space.
When what once felt continuous is divided into segments, much has changed. Our gaze and our sense of time must have shifted as well. The surface becomes a layer that holds time.
No matter how thickly dust may settle, the floor beneath is, in fact, clean. The time and traces that accumulate upon it reveal a new face of the space.

아보카도 메트로놈은 일상적으로 아보카도를 소비하는 경험에서 출발한 작업으로, 시간에 대한 주관적 인식을 다룬다. 망으로 구매한 아보카도가 익지 않을 때는 시간이 더디게 흐르는 것처럼 느껴지지만, 어느 순간 한꺼번에 익어버리면 오히려 시간이 급격히 빠르게 흐르는 듯한 심리적 변화를 겪게 된다. 이처럼 체감되는 시간의 속도 차이, 즉 상대적인 시간 감각을 메트로놈의 리듬으로 시각화했다.
이 작업은 작가의 시간과 현실의 시간이 서로 다른 속도로 흐른다는 주제를 바탕으로 제작된 것으로, 일상적 경험을 통해 시간의 비균질성과 감각적 변화를 드러낸다.

Avocado Metronome originates from a daily habit of eating avocados and explores the subjective perception of time. When avocados bought in a net are still unripe, time seems to pass slowly; yet when they suddenly ripen all at once, there is a psychological sense that time accelerates. This fluctuation reflects a relative experience of time, which is translated into the rhythm of a metronome.
This work is based on the idea that the artist’s sense of time and real-world time flow at different speeds, and it reveals the heterogeneity of time and shifts in perception through everyday experiences.

The bus window is fogged over. Large snow crystals, tinted with the colors of light and dust, are sharply split and resting on the surface. Outside the window, the setting sun hangs red over the front of a white car, divided between the glass and the hood.
