[아라리오 뮤지엄 제주 탑동시네마]

박웅규는 어린 시절 종교적 도상에서 느꼈던 억압과 공포, 그리고 반복되는 종교화의 형식이 본래의 의미를 상실한 껍데기처럼 느껴졌던 경험을 ‘부정성’을 다루는 작업의 출발점으로삼는다. 그의 작업은 교리를 시각적으로 공고히 하고 삶을 통제하는 방식으로 작동해 온 종교화의 형식을 전유하며, 개인적인 부정성과 대면하고 이를 통제·해소하기 위해 독자적인 조형 질서를 구축하는 방식으로 전개되어 왔다. 특히 불화의 형식을 참조해 본래 화면 속 신성한 존재들을 벌레, 소의 내장, 비천한 존재 등 부정적 정서와 힘을 환기하는 대상으로 치환함으로써, ‘정(正)’과 ‘부정(不正)’의 경계를 교란하는 작업을 이어가고 있다.

Wunggyu Park‘s engagement with negativity originates from his early encounters with religious iconography—images that evoked a sense of oppression and fear, and eventually came to feel like hollow shells, emptied of their original meaning through constant repetition. Appropriating the visual codes of religious painting—long used to reinforce doctrine and regulate life—Park has cultivated a practice that confronts his own sense of negativity and seeks to sublimate it through the construction of his own formal order. In particular, by referencing the compositional logic of Buddhist paintings, he substitutes the originally sacred figures with visceral and abject imagery—worms, bovine intestines, and lowly beings—thereby destabilizing the boundary between jeong (the positive) and bu-jeong (the negative).

아라리오뮤지엄은 2026년 4월 30일(목)부터 2026년 7월 19일(일)까지 김지현 작가의 개인전 《너머에 (Beyond)》을 개최한다. 김지현의 는 간단하게 인식되지는 않는다. 얼핏 보기에 회화 평면상 패턴화된 기표들이 무리 지어 조금씩 다른 것을 지칭하는 것처럼 보이지만, 기표에 대응하는 기의가 없기에 김지현의 를 도상 해석적으로 접근하면 길을 잃게 된다. 다양한 변주 속에서 등장하는 형과 색은 기의의 논리가 제공하는 의미망에서 벗어나, 김지현의 작품에서 기표 그 자체로서의 존립을 시도한다. 이것은 그동안 발생했던 추상회화의 다양한 시도 일부를 연상시키기도, 화면 안팎의 물질로서의 미술을 현현해보려 했던 후기모더니즘의 작업을 연상시키기도 한다. 100년 전 아방가르드의 시도를 개인사 내에서 압축적으로 수행한 김지현은 그곳에 머무르지 않고, 작업 자체의 물리적 조건을 다시 지시함으로써, 기의 없이 떠다니는 기표의 사물성을 획득하려 노력한다.

ARARIO MUSEUM presents Kim Ji Hyun’s solo exhibition Beyond, on view from April 30 to July 19, 2026. works resist simple recognition. At first glance, the patterned signifiers scattered across the pictorial plane appear to gesture toward slightly different meanings; but in the absence of corresponding signifieds, any iconographic interpretation quickly leads astray. The forms and colors that recur through variation escape the network of meaning typically structured by signification, instead attempting to exist as signifiers in and of themselves. This recalls certain trajectories in the history of abstract painting, as well as late-modernist practices that sought to foreground art as material both within and beyond the canvas. While Kim compresses, within his own artistic trajectory, a century of avant-garde experimentation, he does not remain there. By redirecting attention to the physical conditions of his practice, he strives to endow these free-floating signifiers—detached from signified meaning—with a sense of objecthood.

아라리오뮤지엄 인 스페이스에서 열리고 있는 민병훈 작가의 개인전 《소멸 (Dissolution)》이 3일남았습니다. 삶의 시간은 필연적으로 죽음으로 향할 것을 알지만, 살아있는 자로서 죽음의 시간은 어디로 가는지 알 수가 없다. 그저 추측하고 희망할 뿐이다. 작가가 성실하게 담아낸, 때론 목숨을 걸고 촬영한 움직임은 시간의 흐름대로 갈지 역방향으로 갈지 갈팡질팡하지만 결국에는 멈춤을 향하고 있다. 영화감독 민병훈은 무빙 이미지와 사진 매체 사이에서 진동하고, 삶과 죽음 사이에서 헤매고, 갈망하고, 회상하고, 희망하며 새로운 작업을 만들어낸다. 그러므로 “소멸”은 죽음이 아닐 것이다. 전시 ≪소멸≫에는 무언가 사라지는 일말의 장면도 나오지 않는다. 오히려 끊임없이 등장할 뿐이다. 그것이 사진 매체에 옮겨져 멈추어지는 시간이 있을지언정, 없어지지 않는다. 무덤도 나무도 무지개도 구름도 파도도 그곳에 있었음을 민병훈은 증언한다.

The time of life inevitably moves toward death, yet for those who live, the destination of death’s time remains unknown. One can only speculate and hope. The movements that the artist has faithfully recorded—at times at the risk of his own life—hesitate between moving forward with the flow of time and reversing against it, but ultimately tending toward stillness. As a filmmaker, Min byung hun oscillates between moving images and photography, wanders between life and death, and creates new works through yearning, remembering, and hoping. For this reason, “dissolution” cannot be equated with death. In the exhibition Dissolution, there is not a single moment in which something truly disappears. Instead, things continually emerge. Even if there are moments when they are transferred into the photographic medium and held in suspension, they do not vanish. Graves, trees, rainbows, clouds, and waves alike— Min byung hun bears witness to the fact that they were there.

Happy International Dog Day! To celebrate, we’d like to introduce and , who greet visitors at the entrance of ARARIO MUSEUM in SPACE. Jjang, with dark brown fur, lies adorably on the ground, while Mong, with a white face, sits gently and attentively. Both works are based on real dogs and are photo sculptures by artist Kwon Osang, later recast in bronze. You can encounter the bronze works of and at ARARIO MUSEUM in SPACE.

민병훈 작가는 본디 영화감독이다. 아들과의 자전적인 이야기를 담은 다큐멘터리 영화 (2023)이 그의 최근 대표작이었다. 이번 전시 마지막 공간에서 의 축약본을 감상할 수 있다. 은 민병훈 작가가 아들 시우의 시를 징검다리 삼아, 제주의 자연 아래에서 슬픔을 머금고 살아가는 부자의 모습을 담담하게 보여준다. 민병훈 작가는 아내를 여의었다. 폐암에 걸린 아내가 여생을 제주에서 보내고 싶다고 하여, 아들과 함께 제주로 이주했다. 제주에 겨우 집을 마련했을 때 아내는 병환이 깊어져 서울의 병원에서 투병하다가, 결국 제주 집에 한 번도 머무르지 못했다. 그렇게 빈자리가 남아있는 제주에서 민병훈 작가는 아들과의 삶을 묵묵히 촬영하고, 제주 자연의 모습을 계속해서 카메라에 담았다. 영화 이 만들어지고, 후에 제주의 풍경과 무덤을 담은 시리즈가 이어지다가 2026년 이 등장했다.

Min byung hun is, at his core, a film director. Min’s most recent work is the documentary film Promise (2023), which recounts an autobiographical story about his relationship with his son. The last section of this exhibition showcases an abridged version of Promise. Using the poem of his son, Min si woo, as a stepping stone, the film quietly portrays a father and son living with grief beneath the natural landscape of Jeju. Min byung hun lost his wife. After being diagnosed with lung cancer, Min’s wife expressed a wish that she’d like to spend her last days in Jeju, prompting Min and his son to relocate there together. However, just as they finally found a home on the island, his wife’s illness worsened, and she remained hospitalized in Seoul, never able to spend a single night in the Jeju house. In this place marked by absence, Min continued to film his life with his son in a restrained, steady manner, while capturing Jeju’s natural environment. After Promise, Min produced a series depicting Jeju’s landscapes and graves, culminating in Dissolution.

오늘은 3월 8일 국제 여성의 날입니다. 여성의 날을 맞아 페미니즘 작가로 중요한 신디셔먼의 작업을 소개합니다. 신디 셔먼은 대중매체가 생산해내는 전형적인 여성 이미지로 자기 자신을 직접 연출하고 촬영하는 사진 작업으로 유명합니다. 특히 셔먼은 현대 여성의 정체성을 탐구하는 대표적인 페미니즘 작가로서 현대 미술사의 중요한 위치를 점하고 있습니다.
초상화 형식이 부각된 시리즈에서는‘매우 평범한 나이든 여성들-당신이 슈퍼마켓에서 찾아낼 수 있을 법한 타입’의 여성들이 등장합니다. 진한 눈 화장, 크게 그려진 입술선 등의 과장된 모습으로 자신을 연출한 그녀는, 사회가 요구하는 미적 기준에 따라 자신의 모습을 가꾸고 변화시켜야 하는 여성들의 삶을 드러내고 있습니다. 국제 여성의 날, 신디셔먼의 작업을 감상해보시는 것은 어떤가요.

Today, March 8, is International Women’s Day. To mark the occasion, we would like to introduce the work of Cindy Sherman, an important feminist artist. Cindy Sherman is known for self-portrait photographs she personally directs and takes in the form of stereotypical images of women featured in mass media. As a major feminist artist who explores the identity politics of contemporary women, Sherman occupies a key position in contemporary art history.
The portraits in the series presents ‘ordinary middle aged women whom we might come across in supermarkets.’ Exaggerating her facial features with accentuated eye makeup and expansive lip lines, she speaks of how the society forces women to groom and transform themselves in accordance with the governing aesthetic standards. Why not take a moment to view Cindy Sherman’s work on International Women’s Day?

ARARIO MUSEUM in SPACE in Seoul is currently carrying out leak repair work across the entire building. Built in 1971 as the former Space Group Building, it was once a center of Korea’s cultural and artistic scene and is now designated as a Cultural Heritage. As a protected cultural property, the museum is carrying out this project with Jongno District to safeguard its original value for future generations. Waterproofing and leak prevention work will help preserve its condition over the long term. Repair work will continue carefully while the museum remains open.
