Filmmaker Sarah Mounia Kachiri introduces “Chants de l’insolation, mémoires en lumière” (Chants of Insolation, Memories in Light), a new film cycle presented by MACAAL and the Musée Yves Saint Laurent Marrakech

Inspired by the current exhibition Seven Contours, One Collection, and more specifically by the Decolonize room, this selection of four films extends the reflections opened within the exhibition space through cinema.

Questions of memory, transmission, decolonial narratives and representation unfold across the screenings, each followed by conversations and discussions.

La réalisatrice Sarah Mounia Kachiri présente « Chants de l’insolation, mémoires en lumière », un nouveau cycle de films proposé par le MACAAL et le Musée Yves Saint Laurent Marrakech.

Inspirée par l’exposition actuelle Seven Contours, One Collection, et plus particulièrement par la salle Décoloniser, cette sélection de quatre films prolonge à travers le cinéma les réflexions ouvertes dans l’espace d’exposition.

“The Moroccans” is one of the final projects conducted by late Leila Alaoui, the French-Moroccan photographer and video artist.

For this series, “The moroccans”, Leila Alaoui travelled across the country with her mobile photographic studio, capturing the ethnic and cultural diversity of Morocco through powerful, dignified portraits.

The work presented here, A bride in Khamlia, southern Morocco (2014), is part of this emblematic series, a testament to her commitment to documenting identities, traditions and the richness of Moroccan communities.

At MACAAL, we deeply value moments where art becomes a space for sharing, learning and connection. Welcoming a group from Dar Bellarj Foundation for this encounter with Yassine Balbzioui was one of those meaningful moments.

Committed to supporting young people through culture, creativity and education, Dar Bellarj carries an inspiring mission that resonates closely with our own values.

The visit began with an introduction to the artist’s world, followed by a discovery of his in-situ work in the Staircase and a screening of one of the films that inspired the piece. It then continued with a hands-on workshop where curiosity, imagination and expression took center stage.

In this video, Ismail Alaoui Fdili introduces Under Destruction, his exhibition presented at MACAAL as part of the Mai de la Photo, curated by Farah Maakel .maakel

Rooted in his observations of urban transformation, the project reflects on the fragile moment where development meets erasure. What begins as construction often reveals itself as demolition, of spaces, of habits, of memory.

The works take shape as photographic frescoes printed on concrete and cement slabs, echoing the very materials that now redefine the city. Alongside them, cast concrete stools, inspired by those used by residents watching their neighborhoods disappear, and a black-and-white film carry the voices and perspectives of those witnessing this transformation from within.

Through Under Destruction, the artist preserves traces of a changing landscape, questioning what is lost, what remains, and how memory can resist disappearance.

On view at MACAAL until August 2, 2026.

Artist Amina Agueznay holds a very special place in our hearts at MACAAL. Her work has been presented in many exhibitions at the museum, including Noise in Material Insanity, Proscenium in Our Land Just Like a Dream, and A Garden Inside and Talisman, both part of our current exhibition Seven Contours One Collection in the Cohabit and Weave rooms, to name just a few.
She has also been one of the museum’s unwavering supporters since its inception.

The announcement that Amina Agueznay and Meriem Berrada will represent the Moroccan Pavilion at the 61st Venice Biennale in 2026 was especially meaningful. Amina and Meriem first met through a project connected to the museum, marking the beginning of a beautiful and lasting collaboration.

Their project Asǝṭṭa for the Moroccan Pavilion, curated by Meriem, reflects the richness of Moroccan heritage and its contemporary resonances. In dialogue with the Biennale’s theme, In Minor Keys, it highlights artisanal know-how as a powerful narrative vector. Rooted in a transdisciplinary practice, Amina Agueznay’s work draws from an intimate knowledge of Moroccan territories and is shaped through long-term collaborations with artisans, institutions, and cultural actors.

As MACAAL’s Artistic Director, Meriem continues to shape the institution’s curatorial vision and strengthen the international visibility of contemporary Moroccan and African art.

We are proud to witness this important milestone and look forward to discovering their work in Venice.

Under Destruction by Ismail Alaoui Fdili - Saturday 2 May at 6 PM, opening & cocktail.

The exhibition captures a turning point, when the present transforms into memory.
The works take the form of photographic frescoes printed on concrete and cement slabs, accompanied by cast concrete stools inspired by those used by residents watching their homes disappear, as well as a black-and-white documentary film carried by the voice of a medina resident.
Produced in collaboration with local artisans, Under Destruction reflects on disappearance, transmission, and the resilience of inhabitants and workers facing urban transformation.

On Earth Day, we turn to Cohabit, a space within MACAAL’s permanent exhibition that reflects on how we live together in a changing world.

Through questions of ecology, migration, urban transformation, and coexistence, the works in this room invite us to rethink our relationship with nature, resources, and all living beings.

During 1-54 Marrakech, MACAAL participated in the Talks Programme with two powerful conversations exploring memory, spirituality and artistic practices.

Statues Also Breathe was presented by with contributions from artist Prune Nourry, Claude Grunitzky co-founder of the Catharsis Foundation, and Professor Michael O. Fajuyigbe of Obafemi Awolowo University alongside the deeply moving testimonies of two survivors among the Chibok Girls, Margaret Yama and Rajab Ibrahim who courageously shared their stories.

The programme also featured Summoning the Spirits, Weaving with the Movement of Lianas, a talk by philosopher, anthropologist and curator Dénètem Touam Bona, whose filmed contribution can also be discovered in MACAAL’s Seven Contours, One Collection exhibition, in the room Initiate.
Drawing on ritual knowledge, spirituality and alternative ways of inhabiting the world, his reflections resonate with the themes explored in the space.

These moments of exchange created meaningful spaces for listening, reflection and dialogue.

Within Seven Contours, One Collection, the permanent exhibition at MACAAL, Converge unfolds as one of the seven thematic spaces.

This room reflects on the unequal dynamics of a globalised capitalist system, where the circulation of goods and capital contrasts with the often limited mobility of African citizens. These constrained trajectories contribute to the emergence of underground countercultures and unexpected confluences between countries, economic systems and communication networks.

Through the works presented, Converge examines how artistic and cultural exchanges develop across borders, diasporas and territories. It focuses on Africa’s rising influence and how cultures, people and ideas meet and interact across borders.
