Obituary of Artist Dr Lun Gywe (1930-2025)

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved husband, father and grandfather, U Lun Gywe, today on 2 October 2025 in Yangon at the age of 96 years old.

U Lun Gywe had been an instructor with the State School of Fine Art (SSFA) in Yangon from 1958-1979 and taught many artists who became well known in their own right. After leaving the SSFA, he took commission works and commercial art work while continuing to paint and teach part time to sustain himself and his family.

In 1990, he helped establish the Golden Valley Art Centre and became a full time fine art artist. In 1999, he opened his own gallery, Artist Life Art Gallery and continued to paint. For many years, he had been widely acknowledged as the greatest living Impressionism artist in Myanmar though his artistic talent extended well beyond Impressionism.

He received many awards over the years for his contributions in the art world, culminating in the conferment of a doctorate by the National University of Art and Culture.

A devout Buddhist, he often meditated and helped to fund the building of a monastery. He regularly contributed both his paintings and money to many charitable causes. He curated 3 rooms of Buddha’s life for the Maha Buddha Vimsa in the Shwedagon Pagoda compound in 1991 among several projects related to Buddhism.

Today is a tragic loss day for us however we all believed he lived a fulfilled life doing what he loved the most which is Art. In conclusion, his legacy is more than the sum of his paintings but a perspective, devotion to art, his teachings of Buddha, and a reminder that true artistry doesn’t fade, no matter how much time passes.
