What Moves Between Us
Artist Spotlight: Rasha Belle Zammit Cutajar
Works: REMNANTS III (2025); REMNANTS IV (2025); REMNANTS V (2026)

REMNANTS explores the movement of material, memory and trace through processes of fragmentation, accumulation and reconstruction. Reworked paper is layered and displaced, transforming what was once a continuous surface into a network of fragments.
The work considers the traces that remain when something moves from one state to another. It asks what remains between states, and what continues to move forward after something has been seemingly left behind. Through form, translucency and light, fragments vary, overlap, protrude in relation to one another.
Here, movement is understood not as a single direction, but as a continuous process of finding the “right” direction. The material’s heterogeneity, eludes the ways that different bodies, environments, memories and experiences are altered through contact and separation.
Rather than representing fluidity directly, REMNANTS allows it to occur through the material itself.

Rasha Belle Zammit Cutajar is a Maltese artist with a BA (Hons) in Fine Art and a background in the conservation of architectural surfaces. Her practice explores relationships between art, material and the nature of things, with a particular interest in materials associated with scientific, organic and environmental processes. Through experimentation with different materials and techniques, she considers their physical properties, transformation and relationship to context. Her current practice explores materiality, sustainability and intersections between artistic and scientific thinking. Zammit Cutajar has also participated in collaborative and public art projects in Malta.

What Moves Between Us
Artist Spotlight: Lucia Seifert
Works: "The Waves" and "Uttanasana" (2026)

Drawing from Virginia Woolf’s The Waves, the work considers generational trauma as something encoded somatically before it can be articulated verbally. Mother and daughter are depicted in the same Uttanasana (forward fold), an act of surrendering to gravity through which the same bodily pattern is repeated. The spine becomes a timeline and an arch of structural tension, tracing where the mother’s stress settles and where it is replicated within the daughter’s body. The emotional weight carried by one does not end at the boundary of her skin. Trauma is approached not as a series of isolated events, but as an uninterrupted wave passing between two bodies, asking where one nervous system ends and the next begins.

Lucia Seifert is a visual artist whose practice investigates generational trauma and the cyclical nature of family history, examining how the past continues to echo into the present. Through depictions of the human form, her work confronts the visceral discomfort of inhabiting her own skin as daughter, sister and woman. Her practice considers the tension between emotional inheritance and the need for self-definition, bringing personal vulnerability and visual storytelling together to explore deeply private experiences of addiction and complex familial ties.

What Moves Between Us
Artist Spotlight: Nina Gerada
Work: "Roma" (2022)

Composed of individually painted and carved ceramic blocks, Roma forms a fragmented, dream-like landscape informed by archaeological excavations, architectural plans and typeset printing blocks. Shifts in scale, texture and pattern move between solid and void, positive and negative imprint, presence and absence. Rather than reconstructing a particular place, the work considers how memory is constructed through fragments and traces. Its modular structure recalls the partial nature of archaeological knowledge, where what remains becomes a means of approaching what has disappeared, and where absence participates as much as material presence in how histories are read.

Nina Gerada is a Maltese artist, designer and educator whose career spans film production design, urban design, architecture and sculpture. After 22 years abroad, her return to Malta has become a central focus within her work. Gerada studied at Chelsea College of Art, the Bartlett School of Architecture at UCL and London Metropolitan University and is a Higher Education Teaching Fellow. Her work has been exhibited at the Malta Art Biennale, the Malta Society of Arts, the British Ceramics Biennial and Collect in London.

What Moves Between Us
Artist Spotlight: Yana Fenech
Works: "The Archive I - Figures and Palms" (2026); "The Archive I - Palms I" (2026); "The Archive I - Palms II" (2026)

This body of work explores the connection between the human body and the botanical world. Figures and palm motifs reflect on closeness, memory and the traces we carry with us. The palms refer to those collected by the artist’s father, becoming a personal archive and a reminder of someone whose presence continues through what is left behind, both physically and in memory. Through this relationship between body and botanical forms, the works consider how people, places and experiences remain with us over time, what we inherit and carry forward and how these connections continue to shape who we are.

Yana Fenech is an artist working primarily through figurative drawing and painting, with imagery that draws from the organic shapes and volumes of humans, nature and living things. Her work considers the diversity of the female figure and the bodies and emotional landscapes that shape experiences of womanhood. Working across different scales, her practice engages with memory and selfhood through self-reflexivity, drawing on personal images and experiences. Rather than approaching nostalgia as a wistful reflection, Fenech uses memory to connect individual experience with changing perceptions of the human form and beauty.

What Moves Between Us
Artist Spotlight: Martina Darmanin
Works: "My Cold Body is Warmed; It is Sluiced and Gleaming #1 - 6" (2026)

The series of work titled "My cold body is warmed; it is sluiced and gleaming" navigates the relationship between skin and water. These paintings place the human body within the infrastructure of a car where body heat and proximity are bottled within a confined space. Here, sweat acts as liquid sensuality to evoke a sensation of memory, desire and sensuality. The work showcases the relationship between an intimate space and the body and how they react to one another. Fluidity becomes a trace of intimacy and wetness, a visual evidence of sexuality, movement and physical proximity.

Martina Darmanin (b. 2000) is a painter and installation artist based in Malta. Her practice explores the reciprocal response between the individual and occupied spaces, as navigated through memory, ritual, and domesticity. Adopting an autobiographical approach, Darmanin engages with the emotions evoked by personal spaces. From an archival perspective, objects, materials, and forms are juxtaposed as repositories of the human condition. By pairing intimacy, playfulness, and the mundane rhythms of everyday life, Darmanin’s works serve as a critical mirror and a response to contemporary lifestyles and routines.
Darmanin completed her Master of Fine Arts at the University of Malta in 2024. She has participated in several solo and collective exhibitions in Malta

On Saturday 26 September, some very creative young visitors came to axis_ for our first ever workshop — What Moves Our Island? — led by artist Kamy Aquilina, exploring how Malta's landscape transforms through nature, time and change.
The children visited Kamy's works on display in What Moves Between Us before creating their own surreal artworks in shades of blue.
At the end of the session, they proudly presented their work.

A big thank you to all the young artists and their families who joined us — we hope to see you back at axis_ soon🎨

What Moves Between Us
Artist Spotlight: Giola Cassar
Works: "More Than We See I, II, III" (2022)

Beginning with a study of whiteness, the work moves away from associations of blankness or purity towards white as layered and porous, holding variations that become visible through closer attention. This becomes a way of approaching the experience of caring for another person, an experience often described as beautiful but easily simplified. Like the surfaces themselves, care can appear as one thing from a distance and become more complex up close, where intimacy exists alongside the need for space. To care is also to become porous. Boundaries between oneself and another become less certain, allowing the rhythms and needs of another to enter one’s own experience. Imperfection is approached not as something to overcome, but as part of the experience of love itself: a single white that, on closer looking, reveals the many tones held within it.

Angela ‘Giola’ Cassar is a photographic artist whose research-based practice explores belonging, its presence and absence and the places through which it is held. Her recent solo exhibition A Place That Fades (2025), curated by Elyse Tonna, was presented at MUŻA. Previous projects include Tessie (2019), Bjuda (2022) and Dining Dialogues (2024). Cassar holds an MA in Photography from the University of Brighton and has exhibited and published internationally. She also teaches photography at MCAST.

What Moves Between Us
Artist Spotlight: Maria Borg
Works: "My Body" (2025), "Soft Like a Flower" (2025), "Xewk/Thorns" (2026), "Becoming" (2026), "Sometimes" (2026)

Through a series of monochromatic screenprints, the work considers the experience of inhabiting a body and understanding it in relation to nature. Drawing from feminism and panpsychism, distinctions between human and non-human become less certain, while the cultivation of plants becomes a metaphor for growth and healing. The patience and care afforded to plants offers a way of approaching the body with similar attention, allowing personal experience to extend towards wider questions of embodiment and coexistence.

Maria Borg is a Maltese visual artist whose practice is deeply personal, often taking a confessional or narrative approach. Her current work explores ecofeminism and panpsychism, using the cultivation of plants as a metaphor for growth and healing. Borg lives and works in Malta, dividing her time between teaching art and her studio practice and has participated in a number of local collective exhibitions. Her first two solo exhibitions, homebody at MUŻA and Touch Me at the Malta Society of Arts, were both presented in 2021.
