🏺 Today, we celebrate International Archaeology Day by highlighting Olof Gollcher’s interest in Malta’s archaeological heritage, reflected in the artefacts and books found at Palazzo Falson.

📚 Among the books in his library are publications by Antonio Annetto Caruana, a prominent 19th century Maltese figure who was very well known in the local archaeological field and known for his studies of Malta’s ancient and Roman antiquities.

A.A. Caruana was involved in the archaeological investigation and works of several sites around Malta and Gozo, namely the Domvs Romana in Rabat.

📖 Pictured are pages from his publication titled Anicent Pagan Tombs and Christian Cemeteries in The Islands of Malta published in 1898, which give us a good insight of ancient, pagan and christian burial sites in Malta, from rock-cut tombs to catacombs. The man behind the illustrations is Filippo Vassallo who also played an important role in the local archaeology scene, in documenting sites through his drawings. ✍️

✨ Set during a glamorous 1920s Halloween party at the Museum Mansion, guests gather to celebrate the inauguration of a priceless artefact—one famously depicted in one of the museum’s paintings. As the evening unfolds, the artefact suddenly goes missing, turning the celebration into a thrilling mystery. 🤔

🫆 Families and friends must join forces with Inspector Gonsalvo Moretti Le Blanc to investigate the crime, uncover hidden clues, and solve the mystery.

🪭 Can you guess what animal is pixelated? 🤔

💭 Here’s a hint - the scene depicted on the fine skin leaf fan is of a particular legend, often depicted by Renaissance painters. This carved and pierced ivory fan dates from c1690 to 1700 and is the earliest in Olof Gollcher’s collection.

👋 Welcoming our new Czech intern, Nikol! Here are a few of her words:

☀️ Hello! My name is Nikol and I am a Master’s student of Arts Education at the University of Hradec Králové. I come from Czechia, a small country called the heart of Europe, since its located right in the middle of the continent. I love to explore nature whilst horse riding and to read books in the sun.

✨ Before finishing my studies, I wanted to gain some international work experience, and I’m glad that I chose Malta, a beautiful Island surrounded by the sea.

💫 Malta didn’t catch my eye only because of its location - I also love its rich history and unique architecture, which Palazzo Falson is a wonderful example of. I am really looking forward to learning as much as I can about this beautiful Island and its people.

☀️ Ahoj! Jmenuji se Nikol Kopalová a studuji výtvarnou tvorbu na Univerzitě Hradec Králové. Pocházím z České republiky - země nazývané srdcem Evropy, jelikož leží ve středu starého kontinentu. Ráda objevuji přírodu na koňském hřbetu a čtu knihy v jarním slunci.

✨ Před dokončením mého studia jsem chtěla získat pracovní zkušenost v zahraničí, a tak jsem si vybrala Maltu, maličký ostrov obklopen Středozemním mořem. Nemůžu se dočkat, až poznám nejen celý ostrov, ale i lidi, co na něm žijí.
