🇲🇹 F'dan l-akkwarell, xi rġiel u ftit nisa minn klassijiet soċjali differenti jidhru miġburin quddiem il-monument ikoniku tal-Assedju l-Kbir fil-Belt Valletta, skolpit minn Antonio Sciortino. L-okkażjoni hi l-Otto Settembre (it-8 ta' Settembru), magħrufa wkoll bħala Jum il-Vitorja. Dakinhar hu l-anniversarju ta' meta t-Torok Ottomani ċedew u telqu minn Malta fl-1565, meta ntemmet il-Ħakma Franċiża fl-1800, u, mill-1943, meta Malta nfdiet mit-Tieni Gwerra Dinjija, li kienet ġabitha għarkupptejha.
Dan l-akkwarell kien fil-kollezzjoni ta' Dr Albert Ganado (1923–2025) u nxtara minn Heritage Malta waqt irkant li sar iktar kmieni din is-sena.
🇬🇧 In this watercolour, men and a few women of all classes gather before Antonio Sciortino’s iconic ‘Monument to the Fallen in the Great Siege’ in Valletta. The occasion is the Otto Settembre (8th September) or Victory Day anniversary marking the successful retreat of the Ottoman Turks in 1565. This day also commemorates the end of the French Occupation in 1800, and, after 1943, it became an annual occasion to honour Malta’s beaten but undefeated re-emergence during the Second World War.
This watercolour originated from the collection of the late Dr Albert Ganado (1923-2025) and was purchased by Heritage Malta at auction earlier this year.
