Immerse yourself in Maltese modern art. The gallery is not just about viewing Pasmore's work, but is an encounter of sorts.

“The abstract artist has to build from a simple but objective centre until he finds a subjective circumference, ” says Victor Pasmore. To understand Victor Pasmore (1908-1995) - his art, his vision, his relevance today - we must necessarily work our way back to the centre from the 'subjective circumference' which we are faced with today. Through the works themselves, gallery talks, workshops and

several events taking place throughout the year, we hope to provide you with a fresh sense of artistic discovery...because, ultimately, it was this sense of discovery which put Pasmore on a continuous path of creative development, which practically spanned an entire century. We're seeking to extend that time-span a little more. The Victor Pasmore Gallery was initially set up by the Victor Pasmore Foundation in collaboration with the Central Bank of Malta in November 2014, and is currently being managed by Fondazzjoni Patrimonju Malti. 📢 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗙𝗿𝗶𝗱𝗮𝘆 𝗧𝗮𝗹𝗸𝘀 - Introducing 𝗔𝗻𝗱𝗿𝗲𝘄 𝗣𝗮𝗰𝗲🗣

Andrew Pace is the archivist and co-founder of Magna Żmien. Since 2018 over 125 sound, image and moving image collections from private donors in Malta and its diaspora have been digitised and stored in a digital community archive, providing a unique resource of everyday lives in the 20th century for artists and researchers to discover. Andrew’s professional background as an ethnomusicologist and archivist has seen him lead archival projects with the British Library and UNESCO, and he is currently working in Collections and Information Management at Heritage Malta.

Fondazzjoni Patrimonju Malti has embarked on a long-term project to digitise, document, and preserve Malta’s Modern Art Movement. Through this project, we aim to educate and inspire current and future generations and foster a connection between art, history and education 🎨📚

Using the in-house digitisation studio at the VP Gallery, we are building a high-quality digital record of archival materials from photographs and letters to sketches, film, catalogues, and personal papers. We aim to ensure that Malta’s artistic legacy is preserved responsibly, made accessible for research, and passed on to future generations 🖼️📖

Through this process, we create high-resolution digital copies of physical documents, artworks, and objects to preserve fragile materials, improve access for researchers, students, and institutions, reduce handling of sensitive originals, and establish long-term digital backups, while ensuring all originals remain fully intact and are returned to the family 💾🔍

Frank Portelli was a pioneering Maltese artist, educator, and designer whose work helped shape the development of modern art in Malta through a distinctive abstract language influenced by international post-war movements; this work is currently on view at the Victor Pasmore Gallery.

Fondazzjoni Patrimonju Malti, in collaboration with the Victor Pasmore Gallery, is proud to launch ‘The Digitisation Project’, an initiative dedicated to preserving, documenting, and making accessible Malta’s cultural heritage through high-quality digital archiving. From photographs, correspondence, and catalogues to sketches, film, exhibition documentation, and personal papers, the project works to safeguard important archival material for future generations📚

A key focus of the initiative is the ‘Maltese Modern Art Archive’, an evolving archive dedicated to preserving the histories, collections, and legacies of Malta’s modern artists. Working closely with artists, families, collectors, researchers, and institutions, the project helps ensure that these stories remain accessible for research, education, and public engagement🎨

We also invite members of the public who hold archival material relating to Malta’s modern art movement or wider cultural history to get in touch. Together, we can help preserve Malta’s cultural memory for generations to come🤝

Sabrina Calleja Jackson is an audiovisual archivist at Malta’s National Archives, working within the National Audio-Visual Institute (NAVI), where she oversees the preservation, cataloguing, and accessibility of Malta’s audiovisual heritage. Holding a Master’s degree in Fine Art, Site and Archiving from the University of Central Lancashire, her work is informed by a unique perspective that views archives as both systems of preservation and spaces for creative interpretation. Previously, she held key roles at Spazju Kreattiv and MUŻA, contributing to the management, documentation, and archival stewardship of Malta’s national art and cultural collections.

Frank Portelli was a pioneering Maltese artist who, after studying in Malta and abroad, helped introduce modern art to Malta through his innovative work across painting, sculpture, stained glass, design, and abstract art. A co-founder of the Modern Art Circle and a representative of Malta at the 1958 Venice Biennale, he left a lasting legacy through his artistic achievements and major public works.🖌️
