"Take care not to perform righteous deeds
in order that people may see them;
otherwise, you will have no recompense from your heavenly Father.
When you give alms, do not blow a trumpet before you,
as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets
to win the praise of others.
Amen,
I say to you, they have received their reward.
But when you give alms,
do not let your left hand know what your right is doing,
so that your almsgiving may be secret.
And your Father who sees in secret will repay you.
"When you pray, do not be like the hypocrites,
who love to stand and pray in the synagogues and on street corners
so that others may see them.
Amen, I say to you, they have received their reward.
But when you pray, go to your inner room, close the door,
and pray to your Father in secret.

In this world, NO ONE is an orphan, because God is our Father and Mary is our Mother...
“As surely as you live, I will not leave you!”
In the first reading, we encounter Elijah’s departure from this world as he walked across the Jordan River with Elisha—his disciple and friend.
At that moment, a chariot swept Elijah away, taking him forever and separating the two of them.
There is a detail in this reading that closely resembles another well-known episode from the Old Testament:
The crossing of the Red Sea. Moses struck the Red Sea with his staff, and it parted in two, allowing the people of Israel to pass through as they fled Egypt.
Here, Elijah strikes the Jordan River with his mantle, and it opens to allow Elijah, Elisha, and the accompanying prophets to cross. The parting of the waters is a sign from God in favor of His people.
Thus, the parting of the waters is a revelation of God:
God reveals Himself in friendship, in Elisha’s faithfulness to Elijah, and in the relationship between a Master and his disciple.
It is therefore interesting to observe Elisha’s faithfulness to his master, Elijah:
“As surely as you live, I will not leave you!”
Faithfulness is stronger than disobedience. Faithfulness means sharing another’s fate until the very end.
“Your Father, who sees in secret, will reward you.”
In the Gospel, we encounter the same passage that is read on Ash Wednesday.
It is a passage where Jesus teaches how to practice justice, prayer, and fasting in a way befitting Christians:
Anonymously, in secret.
The problem that evidently existed in Jesus’s time was that justice, prayer, and fasting were practiced for the sake of being seen—of being recognized for the exercise of virtue. We still face this problem today... Jesus warns of the danger of being driven by the wrong motives in justice, prayer, and fasting.
What, then, is the true, pure purpose of these three practices?
Jesus does not assign them a specific purpose; rather, He highlights how useless and even harmful these practices can be if they are not motivated by the right intention. The true purpose of these practices depends on the individual:
For what purpose do I practice justice?
To make the world more humane?
Because the Gospel says so?
For what purpose do I pray?
So that God will help me?
So that what I want comes to pass?
Why do I enjoy being with a friend?
For what purpose do I fast?
To avoid gaining weight?
To enter into communion with those who have nothing to eat?
Each person determines the purpose... But beware of setting a purpose simply to be seen and recognized.
