3.30 pm In Conversation: Tang Hon Yin

Free entry. All are welcome.

Suma Orientalis Fine Art is delighted to present Horizons of Time, a selection of Tang Hon Yin’s paintings spanning pivotal decades in the artist’s practice. Tang has charted a visual language that is both deeply rooted in landscapes and profoundly attuned to the temporal shifts of memory, perception, and place.

Tang’s abstractions occupy a singular space within Malaysian modern art. Emerging from earlier explorations in figuration, his mature practice turns towards atmospheres, horizons, and topographies rendered in layered veils of colour. His surfaces, often evoking aerial views of earth and sea or the blurred vision of landscapes glimpsed in transit, refuse to settle into representation. Instead, the visuals open onto an in-between space, one where land dissolves into light, and where the temporal becomes spatial, stretched across the canvas in bands, strata, and contours.

In Tang’s works, time itself seems to breathe. The horizon is not simply a line dividing earth and sky, but a metaphor for passage between decades, between places, and between states of being. His works are at once meditative and dynamic, holding within them the paradox of stillness while moving.

Graduated from University Malaya in 1967 and completed his Diploma in Education in 1968, Tang is known for his meditative abstract works. His works have been widely collected by the National Art Gallery of Malaysia, Bank Negara Malaysia (Malaysia’s Central Bank), Galeri Petronas, RHB Bank, Sime Darby Malaysia, Universiti Sains Malaysia, ESSO Singapore and Project Design Belgium.
