A magnificent piece, measuring around 5ft x 5.5ft (150 cm x 170 cm), 'Virgin Jungle' depicts a pristine jungle untainted by human with beautiful pastel hues.

For a century, this primeval forest has stood untouched, never once surrendering to the dark.

Time has not aged these ancient woods; instead, the passing years have become the rich, deep soil for new life to bloom.

Sunlight dances through the layered canopy, scattering gold upon the earth—a silent promise that the old ways still watch over us.

Here, heritage guards the path, hope begins its gentle bud, and the light never truly leaves.

百年未被开采的原始森林，从未坠入幽暗。

时间的沉淀并未让它迟暮，反而成为新生最深厚的土壤。

阳光穿过层叠枝叶，洒落一地光斑——古老在此守护，希望在此萌芽，光明从未离开。

When he was young, Melton loved music, with rock music 🤘 being his particular favourite. He always dreamed of learning the guitar 🎸, but was unable to do so due to financial constraints.

As he grew older, he gained the financial means, but no longer possessed the nimble mind and agility needed to play.

So he thought, if he could not own that dream through music, he could at least paint it.

Created in conjunction with the Siniawan Art & Folklore Music Festival in Sarawak in 2022, this painting reveals the silhouettes of four guitars emerging from the dense Bornean rainforest. Rich, grounding blocks of colour sweep across the canvas, intertwining like the subterranean pulse of ancient roots.

The work crystallises a rare moment of cultural harmony, transforming a gathering of music and art into a lasting visual symphony between melody and the wild.

Because of its deeply personal significance, the painting remained in the artist’s private collection for years, and is now presented publicly in Melton’s World, his ongoing solo exhibition at Younie Gallery, Kuala Lumpur, running till 31 May.

Through painting, Melton finds a way to fulfil a childhood dream once beyond reach.

Sometimes, the dreams we could not hold in life return quietly through the things we create.

Thank you to everyone who came to our opening yesterday!

The day was filled with vibrant conversations among artists, collectors, and art lovers, elevated by the amazing live music performance session by Chen·Mi Music.

The Bidayuh are one of Sarawak’s oldest indigenous communities, carrying with them a culture deeply rooted in the rainforest. For generations, they have lived beside the forest and depended upon it as both shelter and sustenance. The forest was, and remains, the source of life itself.

They drank from its rivers and springs, and gathered whatever the land could offer—from fruits and wild vegetables to river prawns, birds, and game. Even the materials used to build their homes were drawn from the surrounding trees. Yet the forest gave them far more than material survival. It nurtured a rich spiritual culture and an inner world shaped by reverence for nature. Their ancient symbols and totems reflect a people whose beliefs are intertwined with mystery, resilience, optimism, and a profound respect for the natural world.

To encounter Melton’s paintings is to step into an inner landscape woven from colour, movement, and memory. His abstract forms and flowing lines remain inseparable from the forests that shaped both his life and the spirit of his community. Standing before his works, one almost hears the rainforest calling—inviting us to come closer, to embrace, to understand, and to lose ourselves freely within its vitality and joy.

Here, perhaps, we are reminded how to return to ourselves: to feel more deeply, to accept who we are, and to become more fully human.

比达友族，是砂拉越一个拥有古老文化的部落族群。他们世世代代以森林为家，傍林而居。

森林，便是他们生活中的衣食父母。

他们喝的是深林中的河水与泉水，吃的是森林里一切可以果腹之物——从瓜果、野菜，到鸟虫、河虾，乃至虎等动物；建屋的用材，亦取之于所依傍的林木。

然而，森林赋予他们的不仅是物质上的丰足，更重要的，是丰富而绚烂的精神文化与心灵护养。

他们拥有属于自己的古老图腾，怀抱着对大自然的敬仰与崇敬，从而使精神世界涵养出一种神秘而乐观豁达的气质。

观赏他的作品，那一幅幅由抽象色彩、形态与线条交融而成的内心绘图，始终离不开滋养他生命与族群的森林元素。

面对他的画作，你仿佛能听见森林在呼唤——它在招呼你去靠近、去拥抱、去理解，去快乐而放纵地沉浸其中。

Younie Gallery is pleased to announce Melton’s World, a solo exhibition by Borneo artist Melton Kais.

Join us for the exhibition opening this Sunday (10 May), officiated by guest of honor Mr. Lu Chun-Neng, Founder and Group CEO of RT Pastry Holdings Berhad. The artist will be in attendance to share insights into his work.

Hailing from Bau, Sarawak, the 66-year-old veteran artist of Bidayuh origin was initially trained as an art teacher, having served as a panellist, coordinator, and examiner for Visual Art Education at the Malaysian Certificate of Education (SPM), as well as a chief judge for numerous art exhibitions held by the Ministry of Tourism, Sarawak.

Growing up surrounded by nature, Melton’s paintings are inspired by childhood reminiscences of a time when the forest still flourished and the river sang. As his style transitions towards Abstract Expressionism, he focuses on the interplay of colour and the fluidity of strokes to convey his inner spiritual world—a land of the untainted, full of innocence and kindness, where the soul soars and imagination runs free.

A resident artist of Galleria in Kuching, Melton’s works are held in the permanent collections of the National Art Gallery, Petronas Art Gallery, and Bank Negara Malaysia. He was a close friend of another well-known Borneo-Bidayuh artist, the late Raphael Scott Ahbeng, with whom he had a duo art exhibition at Younie Gallery in 2012.

今年66岁的比达友族资深艺术家 Melton Kais，来自砂拉越石隆门（Bau）。早年接受美术教师培训，曾担任马来西亚教育文凭（SPM）视觉艺术科的评审委员、协调员及考官，并多次受邀出任砂拉越旅游部主办艺术展览的总评审。

孩童时期，Melton在大自然环绕下长大。那时，森林依然茂密，河流吟唱着清脆的诗歌。这些宝贵的童年记忆，最后成为笔下一次次绽放的鲜活灵感。随着创作风格逐步转向抽象表现主义，他愈发关注色彩间的对话与笔触的流动，以此传递其内在的精神世界：一片纯净未染、天真无邪的圣域。在那里，灵魂得以飞扬，想象得以奔驰。

其作品已被马来西亚国家美术馆、国油美术馆及马来西亚国家银行等权威机构收藏。Melton亦为另一名同样来自婆罗洲的比达友族艺术家——已故 Raphael Scott Ahbeng 的挚友，两人曾于2012年在颜丽轩画廊举办双人展览。
