Well known in Chinese culture, koi fish carry powerful meanings of wealth, perseverance, and harmony. The presence of nine koi adds an auspicious layer, as the number 9 (九) symbolises eternity and longevity through its sounding with “forever.” This work also marks the artist’s first exploration into animal subjects.

Tupi’ Talun and Rong Sia are traditional handicraft of the Lun Bawang. Tupi’ Talun is made from tree bark and is worn by men, while Rong Sia is made from basung (the aerial root of a palm tree) and is worn by women. Both are for outdoor use, especially in paddy fields, and are also worn during traditional dances. They are also traditionally presented as meaningful gifts during Lun Bawang wedding ceremonies.

The Lun Bawang girl is a personal project inspired by the artist’s ancestral roots, who grew up surrounded by strong, passionate female role models in her family. Hence, a homage to the beauty, strength and femininity of Lun Bawang women is expressed through her painting. Taking inspiration from art nouveau and figurative surrealism styles, flowers continue to be a key feature in The Lun Bawang Girl. Flowers bring in emotions and hidden meanings that is open to interpretation depending on the viewer, giving life to the artwork.
