Oba Ovonramwen fled but later surrendered to prevent further bloodshed.
Why he was taken to Calabar
The British did not want him near Benin where he could rally resistance.
He was deposed and sent into exile in Calabar (present-day Cross River State), very far from his kingdom.
Calabar was commonly used by the British as a place to exile African kings.
What happened to him in Calabar
Oba Ovonramwen lived in exile from 1897 until his death in 1914.
He was never allowed to return to Benin alive.
His kingship was taken away, and Benin was placed under British colonial rule.
After his death
In 1914, after his death, the British allowed his son, Oba Eweka II, to become Oba, but with limited powers under colonial control.
In summary
The Oba of Benin was taken to Calabar by force, as part of British colonial punishment and control, not because he committed a crime by modern standards. It was a deliberate move to destroy Benin’s independence.
If you want, I can also explain:
Why Calabar was chosen specifically
The role of the Benin Bronzes
Or how this still affects Nigeria today

In 1897, British officials wanted full control over Benin because of its wealth, trade power, and independence.
A British delegation tried to enter Benin City against the Oba’s instructions (there was a sacred period when visitors were forbidden).
Some members of that delegation were killed by Benin chiefs and warriors.
Britain used this incident as an excuse to attack.
The British Punitive Expedition
The British launched a military invasion called the Punitive Expedition of 1897.
Benin City was burnt, thousands of people were killed, and priceless artworks (Benin Bronzes) were looted and taken to Europe
