Terwijl natiestaten tot de verbeelding spreken, zijn er ook echt verbeelde staten. Beoefenaars van de hobby geofictie ontwerpen hun eigen landen, compleet met vlaggen, kaarten, volkslied of zelfs een taal. ‘Micronationalisten’ daarentegen verklaren zich de koning of president van een eigen staat. In hun eigen achtertuin, bijvoorbeeld. Meestal bij wijze van grap of spel. Soms in bittere ernst.

Benieuwd welke persoonlijke en alternatieve staatjes er bestaan naast natiestaten? Je ontdekt ze in de tentoonstelling ‘Vorm en vaderland’.

🇬🇧 Whilst nation states capture the imagination, there are also states that exist purely in the imagination. Practitioners of the hobby of geofiction design their own countries, complete with flags, maps, national anthems or even languages. ‘Micronationalists’ on the other hand, declare themselves king or president of their own state, such as their own back garden. Sometimes jokingly, sometimes in earnest.

In de permanente presentatie ‘Design!’ is sinds kort een Bruynzeelkeuken van Piet Zwart uit 1938 te bewonderen. Wat oogt als een frisse, moderne keuken was in feite een uitgekiend systeem, ontworpen rond één specifieke gebruiker: de (huis)vrouw. Dit maakte het werk in huis lichter, maar legde tegelijk vast wie dat werk geacht werd te doen. Opmerkelijk genoeg vormt dit gedachtegoed nog altijd de basis van moderne keukens.

‘Design!’ is gratis te bezoeken op de begane grond van het museum.

🇬🇧 The permanent exhibition ‘Design!’ has been recently expanded with a Bruynzeel kitchen designed by Piet Zwart in 1938. What appears to be a fresh, modern kitchen was in fact a carefully engineered system designed around one specific user: the (house)wife. This made the work lighter, but it also fixed who was expected to do the work. Remarkably, this way of thinking still forms the basis of modern kitchens.

´Design!’ is free to visit on the ground floor of the museum.

Kom je eigen onderbroek versieren, laat je verrassen tijdens een rondleiding en geniet van muziek tijdens de Museumavond! Samen met Het Noordbrabants Museum gooien we op vrijdag 29 mei gratis de deuren open van 19.00 tot 22.00. Daarna dans je erop los tot in de kleine uurtjes. Iedereen is welkom voor een avond vol muziek, performances, workshops, rondleidingen en meer. Neem je vrienden en familie mee en kom gezellig langs!

Come and decorate your own underpants, be amazed during a guided tour, and enjoy the music during the Museum Evening! Together with Het Noordbrabants Museum, we’re opening our doors for free on Friday 29 May from 7 pm to 10 pm. After that, you can dance the night away until the early hours. Everyone is welcome for an evening packed with music, performances, workshops, guided tours and more. Bring your friends and family along and come and join the party!

24 mei | In Shape, Out of Sight: de verborgen vormgeving van menstruatie

Wat we niet zien, is vaak zorgvuldig ontworpen. Tijdens deze lezing verkent onderzoeker Debra Knoop de vaak verborgen geschiedenis van menstruatieproducten en -cultuur, die nauw verweven is met de ontwikkeling van ondergoed. Van zelfgemaakte oplossingen tot een wereldwijde industrie: hoe zijn deze producten gevormd door ideeën over het lichaam, en waarom mogen ze vooral niet gezien worden?

Monumenten kunnen ‘nationaal bewustzijn’ creëren, door iets te vieren of juist te herdenken. In de tentoonstelling ‘Vorm en vaderland’ is een model te zien voor de obelisk van het Nationaal Monument op de Dam in Amsterdam. Hier wordt ieder jaar op 4 mei de Nationale Dodenherdenking gehouden.

🇬🇧 Monuments can foster a sense of ‘national identity’ by celebrating or commemorating something. The exhibition ‘Designing the Nation State’ features a model of the obelisk at the National Monument on Dam Square in Amsterdam. Here, the National Remembrance Day ceremony is held every year on 4 May.

Nu de dagen langer zijn, kun je op iedere eerste donderdagavond van de maand in het museum ronddwalen. Geniet daarna, of tussendoor, van de laatste zonnestralen op het terras in de binnentuin. Perfect voor als je doordeweeks of in het weekend altijd op pad bent. Of juist als je het museum liever in alle rust verkent, buiten alle drukte om.

Spelen met orde en chaos door te stapelen. In dit decoratieve tafelstuk van Richard Hutten stapelt de ontwerper ogenschijnlijk lukraak vormen op elkaar. De compositie is echter zorgvuldig opgebouwd uit kopieën van producten van de Bossche aardewerkfabriek Cor Unum.

🇬🇧 Playing with order and chaos by stacking. In this decorative table piece by Richard Hutten, the designer seemingly stacks forms together haphazardly. Yet the composition is carefully constructed from copies of products made by the Den Bosch earthenware factory Cor Unum.

Meivakantie | Kom knippen, plakken, tekenen en kleuren in het museum! Van korsetten en strakke pakken tot de sportschool en shapewear: wat we mooi vinden en hoe we ons lichaam vormgeven, verandert door de eeuwen heen. Maar hoe ziet het lichaam van de toekomst eruit? Krijgen mensen over 50 jaar een glitterhuid of zijn ze misschien allemaal 5 meter lang? Ga samen aan de slag met het maken van een collage tijdens de gratis familieworkshops.

May holidays | Come and cut, glue, draw and colour at the museum! From corsets and tight-fitting suits to the gym and shapewear: what we find attractive and how we shape our bodies has changed over the centuries. But what will the body of the future look like? Will people have glittery skin in 50 years’ time, or will they perhaps all be 5 metres tall? Come and create a collage together during the free family workshops.

Op Koningsdag (27 april) is het museum helaas gesloten, maar wellicht loop je op de vrijmarkt zomaar tegen designgeschiedenis aan. Zo verkocht HEMA in 2024 de ‘vrijmarkt tompouce tape’, waarmee kopers hun plaats op de Koningsdag-vrijmarkt konden markeren. Handig én feestelijk, want de tape had de kleuren van een oranje tompouce, het iconische gebakje uit hun assortiment.

Unfortunately, the museum is closed on King’s Day (27 April), but you might just stumble across a bit of design history at the flea market. In 2024, for example, HEMA sold ‘King’s Day tompouce tape’, which buyers could use to mark their spot at the King’s Day flea market. Handy and festive, as the tape featured the colours of an orange tompouce, the iconic pastry from the HEMA range.

De nieuwe tentoonstelling ‘Vorm en vaderland’ toont hoe de autoriteit van de staat, meer dan je zou verwachten, leunt op ontworpen symbolen en rituelen: de nationale vlag, het volkslied, bankbiljetten. Ons leven zit vol met bekende en minder bekende ontwerpen die ons eraan herinneren waar onze loyaliteit hoort te liggen.

Met shapewear, butt lifts en vrouwen zoals Kim Kardashian lijken ronde billen vooral een schoonheidsideaal van de huidige tijd. De tentoonstelling ‘In Shape’ toont echter hoe oud dit ideaal echt is. Zo verbreedt in de 18de eeuw de panier het lichaam van de vrouw zijwaarts. Vanaf de 19de eeuw verschuift het volume naar achter: de tournure vormt de billen. Een vorm van shapewear die toch een stuk minder comfortabel oogt dan de kleding van vandaag.

Meer vormende ondermode voor zowel vrouwen als mannen vind je in tentoonstelling ‘In Shape’.

🇬🇧 With shapewear, butt lifts and women like Kim Kardashian, a curvy bottom seems to be a modern beauty ideal. The exhibition ‘In Shape’, however, shows how old this ideal really is. In the 18th century, for example, the panier was used to widen a woman’s hips. From the 19th century onwards, the focus shifted to the back: the tournure shaped the buttocks. A form of shapewear that looks a lot less comfortable than today’s clothing.
