Warning! Truth spilling..
NILA was never about perfection. It has always been about connection and the power of connection.
I do not identify as a singer. I never have. I am a multidisciplinary artist using many different mediums, and my voice is one of them. Not only through singing, but through storytelling, movement, textile etc.
The artwork is the connection itself.
This video is full of imperfections. But somehow, these imperfections say everything about what women can do for each other. How we can see one another. Lift each other up. Hold each other when we forget ourselves.
At this moment on stage I was struggling. I suddenly found myself thinking: what the f**k am I doing here? I lost connection with myself for a moment. With my body. With my confidence.
saw it.
And that is the power of women.
Fifteen years ago, when I was still teaching, Aelia was my student. I was trying to save her from being expelled. And now, fifteen years later, she was saving me on stage. With her voice, confidence and presence.
Everyone on that stage lifted me up and carried me and I them. I love you deeply
That is NILA.
Connection. Sharing. Holding each other. Lifting each other up.
Sometimes the work is not the song.
Sometimes the work is the way we catch each other when we fall.
