The Colossus of Rhodes: A Modern Depiction of an Ancient Wonder

Rising an estimated 33–48 meters, the Colossus of Rhodes—one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World—was constructed between 292 and 280 BC by the sculptor Chares of Lindos. Dedicated to the sun god Helios, the statue commemorated Rhodes’ victory over the forces of Cyprus.

Built from iron and bronze with a stone core, the colossal figure was assembled using massive earthen ramps. It stood for only 54 years before an earthquake in 226 BC toppled it at the knees. Though its exact location remains uncertain, modern reconstructions continue to evoke its awe-inspiring presence.

Su Nuraxi: Sardinia’s Prehistoric Stone Giant.

Before the dominance of Rome or Greece, the people of Sardinia were constructing monumental stone structures known as nuraghi. Among them, Su Nuraxi near Barumini stands as the most iconic.

Built in the 17th century BCE, this fortress complex features a central tower surrounded by four corner towers, forming a bastion of defense and community life. By the 13th century BCE, a thriving village had emerged around it, complete with stone dwellings arranged in circular formations.

Artifacts found here indicate a sophisticated culture skilled in metalwork, textiles, and long-distance trade. Unlike other Mediterranean civilizations, the Nuragic people developed a distinctive identity shaped by isolation and resilience.

Su Nuraxi is more than just an archaeological site—it's a preserved echo of a unique civilization that carved its own path through prehistoric Europe.

Kerbstone 15 is a Neolithic stone over 5,000 years old, located at the Knowth passage tomb in Ireland’s Boyne Valley. It features elaborate carvings, including a central depression surrounded by 20 radiating lines, along with spirals and U-shaped designs.

As one of 124 decorated kerbstones encircling the tomb’s main mound, it belongs to the largest concentration of megalithic art in Europe. While some researchers believe it might represent a form of early calendar, the true meaning of its symbols remains a topic of speculation.

Eirene’s Mummy Portrait.

“This is Eirene, daughter of Silvanos, whose mother was Senpnoutis. May her spirit live before Osiris-Sokaris, the great deity, lord of Abydos, for eternity.”
These words, written in demotic script, are inscribed on a mummy portrait positioned over Eirene’s face and neck. Her father had a Roman name, while her mother’s was Egyptian, illustrating the cultural blend of the era.

Dating to the 1st or 2nd century CE during Roman rule in Egypt, the portrait is painted in encaustic (hot wax) on wood. This unique piece is now housed in the Württemberg State Museum in Stuttgart, Germany.

Recovered from a 2,600-year-old shipwreck off the coast of Gela, Sicily, these ingots are made of orichalcum, a rare golden-colored alloy famously described in ancient texts. Dating to the 6th century BC, the discovery was groundbreaking because it provided the first physical evidence of a metal many had previously considered purely mythical.

The alloy mainly consists of copper and zinc, resembling a form of brass highly valued for both its beauty and durability. In antiquity, it was regarded as second only to gold in worth and was frequently associated with Plato’s legendary descriptions of Atlantis.

The shipwrecked vessel was most likely a merchant ship transporting the metal to a local workshop where it would have been crafted into jewelry or decorative objects. The discovery confirms that orichalcum existed as a genuine commodity within Mediterranean trade networks, helping bridge the gap between mythology and historical reality.
