Artwork highlight

Sam Francis is known for his abstract works in which thin washes, drips, and splashes of primary color appear to float across expansive fields of white space. Exploring the creative process was one of Francis’ main driving forces.

From the 1960s onward, he developed paintings in which white became increasingly dominant, softly framed by touches of color along the edges. He often dedicated these works to his “angels,” evoking a sense of infinity and the endless possibilities of light and expression.

In his work, the white space is never empty it feels alive, expansive, and radiant at once. It creates an openness that seems to both absorb and reflect everything around it, suggesting stillness, vastness, and a quiet invitation to look beyond what is immediately visible.

This work on paper was created in Francis’ Venice studio in California in 1989. When you swipe to the right, you can see Francis working around the painting in the bottom right of the photograph taken by Nico Delaive himself.

With the sun finally back in Amsterdam, it feels like the flowers can come out again, just like in An Homage to Monopink, 1960 B (2012) by Takashi Murakami.

This vibrant work bursts with Murakami’s iconic smiling flowers, layered in radiant shades of pink that instantly lift the mood. The repetition creates a playful rhythm, while the glossy finish adds a soft shimmer, almost like sunlight catching the surface.

After grey days, this piece feels like a celebration of light, color, and optimism. A reminder that when the sun returns, everything blooms. 🌸

Archive 2008: Ayako Rokkaku in her Amsterdam studio.

During this period, Rokkaku explored the power of white space, allowing her iconic figures to emerge vividly against minimal backgrounds. Her use of bright, bold colors gave life and energy to her compositions, making each figure feel dynamic and full of movement.

At this time, she drew inspiration from the gestural, expressive work of Cy Twombly, translating that energy into her own playful yet deeply emotional style. These years in Amsterdam were formative for Rokkaku, helping her develop the signature approach that would define her later work.

This glimpse into her studio captures not just her process, but the spirit of experimentation and creativity that has always been at the heart of her art.

Kees van Bohemen (1928–1985) was a Dutch painter known for his expressive and dynamic style, evolving from abstract expressionism to vibrant figurative work. In this painting, he creates a space that feels both architectural and emotional.

Bold layers of red, yellow, and purple overlap in restless brushstrokes, suggesting an interior that shifts and breathes. Figures and forms emerge and dissolve, inviting the viewer to move through the composition and experience it as a moment rather than a place.

27th September the Carl-Henning Pedersen & Else Alfelt Museum opened its doors to the exhibition Karel Appel – Barber Barbar, the most comprehensive presentation of Karel Appel’s work ever to be shown in Denmark. The exhibition sheds new light on the barber’s son from Amsterdam who, as co-founder of the Cobra movement, revolutionised post-war art with his barbaric energy, spontaneous painting, and uncompromising creative force.

Karel Appel (1921–2006) was a central figure in Cobra and the first among the group’s artists to achieve international recognition. His art was shaped by a time period marked by upheaval and change – and for Appel, painting became a physical act, a performance in which the whole body worked with the canvas. The works in the exhibition range from early pieces created during the Cobra years to the brutal paintings that confront the viewer with their raw vitality of colour and form. In particular, the monumental canvases begun in the late 1950s became his signature and earned him the epithet the Barbarian.

With Barber Barbar, visitors are invited into a space where Appel’s creative force still vibrates. His works are not merely pictures, but experiences confronting us with life’s force and intensity. The exhibition will be a rare opportunity to experience the breadth and strength of one of Cobra’s most uncompromising artists.

A selection of the works on display comes from Gallery Delaive, stay tuned for more photos and information.

After Nico Delaive saw Ayako Rokkaku at the Volta Art Fair in Basel in 2006, he faced a rapidly depleted number of her works and did not buy anything at that time. Instead, he accepted an invitation from Takashi Murakami to come to Tokyo, where Rokkaku would again be present at the next edition of Geisai three months later. To Rokkaku’s astonishment, Delaive bought every single one of her works and invited her to exhibit at his gallery in Amsterdam. He followed this up with an offer he would make only once in his life as a gallery owner: “I will buy everything you make from this moment,” he said. Rokkaku accepted his offer, which Delaive honored for many years.

To celebrate this Japanese–Dutch story, Ayako Rokkaku teamed up with , makers of Delft Blue since 1653, in a collaboration initiated by Gallery Delaive to create 200 hand-painted ceramic sculptures.
