We have entered the last week of the black bird was singing, the light was bright, the solo exhibition by Marilyn Sonneveld.

As part of the finissage and Amsterdam Art Week we host a live performance this Saturday from 4pm onwards by Megan Irusta Cornet and Sudo Grace in the exhibition.

“En herinneren is een verdachte aangelegenheid want zijn het wel echt die handen die ik me herinner
of is het al te lang geleden? De gelijkenis is niet doorzichtig als glas, het is mistig als glas. Een wazig
venster naar een verleden waar iedereen een eigen versie van heeft. Schimmige herinneringen, en dan toch: een helder contour. Handen of ogen of misschien een neus. Ik denk aan dingen die van iedereen en niemand tegelijk zijn. Mijn moeders handen, of de herinnering aan mijn moeders handen.”

afra eisma’s work is currently in view in Playing House, the Children’s Biennale at the Groninger Museum.

Playing House is about the rules children grow up with, and about the ones worth breaking. The exhibition looks closely at what usually escapes the eye, such as words and images carved into a school desk, an imaginary friend nobody else can see, or a sound that carries more meaning than any sentence could.

Visit Playing House until January 10th, 2027 at Groninger Museum. With works by Mercedes Azpilicueta, afra eisma, Petrit Halilaj, Eva Kot’átková, Lina Lapelytė, sophie serber & Ola Vasiljeva

“A lot of my work is about hidden authority and how that authority shapes us as human beings. As a person who is dyslexic, I’m always aware of my mistakes. There’s a feeling of righteousness that comes with correcting other people. A need to control other bodies. The idea of correction feeds the need of being pure. The works are about what it means to be pure, clean or hygienic.”

“Schimmige herinneringen, en dan toch: een helder contour. Handen of ogen of misschien een neus. Ik
denk aan dingen die van iedereen en niemand tegelijk zijn. Mijn moeders handen bijvoorbeeld, of de
herinnering aan mijn moeders handen.

Mist dus, mist in glas en mist op doek. Lagen groen over lagen groen en dan die twee figuren, als
opgetrokken uit de mist. Een vader en een kind. Die vallen ook onder de categorie van dingen die van
iedereen en niemand tegelijk zijn. Wat ik bedoel is: er is er maar eentje van jou of als je geluk hebt een
paar, maar de andere zijn van de anderen. Die van jou gaat maar één keer dood en die van de

Sonneveld’s work moves between the personal and the universal. Familiar images, family scenes, a hand holding another hand, flowers and landscapes, take on something elusive. Like memories themselves, they are at once familiar and blurred, close yet distant.
