VZL is very excited to present the work of Tom Alon at Art Island 2026.
She will combine works created during her recent residency in Japan (here you see her with a work in progress) with paintings made in her studio in Amsterdam.
“Painting allows me to settle in, even if merely for a moment. I inhabit; I lay heavy layers of paint, and the weight of the oil gives my flaky story a sense of history. Dealing playfully with materials that carry long traditions, I create images that are almost in motion- like snapshots of a story that remains untold. The surfaces I choose tell stories from previous lives - laminated floor i find in the street, piles of oxidised copper next to the bins. Giving them a second chance, a stage. I sacrifice my carpet, turning it into a surface for painting, too. hoping you will come in, make yourself at home.” The residency in Japan was Alon’s first steps into ceramics. The series,These hands are kneading dough, was created in collaboration with her sister and ceramic artist Souf Alon. In the Japanese countryside, the sisters harvested local clay and natural pigments from rice fields, responding to each other with the intuitive play of childhood and reflecting on ideas of home and belonging"
