About the gallery / gallery statement

tegenboschvanvreden started in 2009 in a former carpenter’s workshop at the Bloemgracht, one of the canals in the Jordaan, a famous cultural area in Amsterdam. The gallery is run by Pietje Tegenbosch and Martin van Vreden. It presents a program of exhibitions by internationally oriented, mainly young artists. Next to that a parallel program of performances, a

rtist talks, lectures, filmscreenings, book presentations and discussions generates a dynamic context. The gallery aims at realising interesting collaboration projects with different parties, either in the art world or from other (cultural, business) fields. The main objective of tegenboschvanvreden is to create a lively platform for contemporary art and the theoretical discourse.

Third Opinion | opening April 18, 5-7 pm

We are elated to announce ‘Third Opinion’: a solo presentation with new works by Lieve Hakkers.

Hakkers embraces mystery as a generative force to mold a universe where ambiguity and opacity takes precedence over clarity. Rather than offering fixed meanings, the works unfold as open visual fields - it is up to the observer to excavate the images in order to find out what rules and laws apply in her painted and drawn world.

We look forward to seeing you at the festive opening in the gallery on Saturday April 18 from 5 to 7 pm!

On view from April 18 until May 16.

Have you seen ‘What Lingers, What Shifts’ by Lorian Gwynn yet?

For her first solo exhibition in the gallery where Gwynn presents captivating portraits : “The better I know someone, the less guidance I need. A glance, a small movement, unfolds in thin layers of oil paint. Sometimes I get to know someone better by painting them; sometimes, the process primarily helps me realize how I see others.”
Lorian Gwynn balances the tradition or portrait-painting with a fragmented, cinematic perspective. Her work draws us into a shifting reality shaped by transformation, connection, and the rhythms of daily life.

Now extended until April 11 - don’t miss it!

We’re open from thurs-sat from 1-6pm.

We are happy to announce ‘What Lingers, What Shifts’ the first solo presentation of Lorian Gwynn in the gallery with new works.
We look forward to welcoming you at the opening on Saturday February 28, from 5 to 7 pm!

Gwynn’s work revolves around intuition, chance, and the discovery of unexpected connections: conjuring up reality as layered and dynamic, like a stream of experiences. Gwynn’s portraits are part of a long painterly tradition. Her expressive painting does originate from a linear search for resemblance to an individual. Yet, in their transparent layering, they ultimately reveal a contemporary, fragmented, and cinematic perspective.

On view from February 28 until April 4, 2026.

Have you stopped by ‘Salon Amsterdam’ yet? It’s your last chance to visit!

Ana Navas draws from monuments, fashion history, and modern sculpture, translating art historical references into contemporary forms. Her work explores the relationship between form and function, original and copy — a process recorded through her “plates.”:

“They act kind of as a footnote in the exhibition, which presents recognizable sceneries that have to do with the topics in the exhibition: research translated into a material outlet. It’s a bit like when an artist presents an archive, but instead of photographs or notes, I do miniature paintings on plates. “ (excerpt from interview with OBRA magazine/Fabiola Talavera)

For those yet to visit, a highlight from our current show ‘Salon Amsterdam’. Last week to visit!

Working with constructed images, Tom Callemin explores how bodies, identities, and perception are formed and perceived within and through photography. He shapes the experience of an image, through a glimmer of reality. The images question, in a conceptual way, photography as a medium in these times of unbridled visual production.

Have you visited our current group show “Interrupted Whispers” yet?

Interrupted Whispers” shows us that vulnerability offers an opportunity to investigate, through the body, what conditions allow for new and different connections and inspiration.

Saskia’s Stick by Ana Navas is composed of fragments taken from various Rembrandt paintings of the Roman goddess Flora, for which his first wife, Saskia van Uylenburgh, posed as a model. The textiles incorporated into the piece carry patterns drawn from the pillars of the Oude Kerk, where Saskia was laid to rest. “These fragments are reassembled into new compositions that recall the human form, while still evoking the fantasies that shaped their original creation” (Ana Navas)

With works by Krystel Geerts, Lieve Hakkers, Michal Helfman, Paul Kooiker, Cristina Lucas, Ana Navas, Emma van der Put, Marien Schouten, Dieuwke Spaans and Marenne Welten.

On view until January 4, don’t miss it!

These are the final days of ‘Friede auf Erden’, the exhibition by Sander Breure & Witte van Hulzen at Huis Willet-Holthuysen (Amsterdam Museum). They made a video installation that re-interprets ‘Weihnachtslegende 1943’, a play for puppet theatre written by German Jewish refugee Grete Weil. It is presented together with a constellation of drawings, photographs, and other works from the museum-collection, curated by Sander & Witte.

“When in danger the sea cucumber divides itself in two: one self it surrenders for devouring by the world, with the second it makes good its escape. (...) On one shore death, on the other life. Here despair, there hope. (...) We know how to divide ourselves, how true, we too. But only into body and an interrupted whisper. Into body and poetry. (…)” (Excerpt from Autotonomy by Wislawa Szymborska)

Hope to see you there!

We are glad to share that the exhibition “Its throat is parched with thirst, but it would not accept a single drop of water from alien hands” by Hamza Halloubi in De Pont Museum is now open!

Halloubi presents his latest projects for the first time: Vizor (2024), his first feature film which deals with insurmountable dilemmas in life and art; and his most recent series of works that centres around the fate of Mehdi Ben Barka. The prominent Moroccan opposition leader mysteriously disappeared in Paris in 1965 and - according to an investigative journalist with The New York Times Magazine - lies buried under what is now the Fondation Louis Vuitton, a museum for modern and contemporary art on the outskirts of the city. Based on this thesis, Halloubi conducts an evocative and poetic exploration of the role of art in a late-stage capitalist society.

Marenne Welten balances between the logical and illogical, taking from universal stories and finding interfaces with her own memories. She dismantles her mind’s image into pieces, allowing fragments to carve themselves into the thick oil paint. Welten calls into being new meanings, new associations, new contexts for previously closed chapters: those of family tragedy, of physical spaces, and of journeys travelled.

Shakespeare’s Sisters opens this evening, September 5, from 5-8 pm.
