Opening | Maria Roosen | ‘EXPRESS’ | 4 September | 5 - 7 pm

We warmly invite you to join us this Friday to celebrate the start of the season with Maria Roosen's 'EXPRESS'. In 'EXPRESS' gentleness is not a comfort, but an attitude and an intention. These times demand that we be outspoken. Roosen responds not with greater volume, but with greater precision. The work reveals what words can no longer convey. That is what EXPRESS expresses.

Today's highlight | Zbigniew Rogalski 'Museum (bear)' (2022).

In ‘Museum (bear)’ Rogalski depicted the skull of a bear, presented in a museum cabinet together with the reflection of the light on the glass, dividing the space between the viewer and the skull. Through the effect of the light the animal loses its characteristics, becoming a distant image of an endangered species.

Opening next week! 'EXPRESS' by Maria Roosen.

In her first exhibition at AKINCI, Roosen shows new work in which two movements clash. The title 'EXPRESS' hints at a wordplay: the Dutch word for the conscious, purposeful and intentional ‘expres’ interacts with the English word ‘express’: what must come out, which can no longer be held back and expresses itself by any means.

Join us and the artist on Friday, 4 September, 5 - 7 pm to celebrate the opening and start of the season🌹

'Tidal Settlers' by Juul Hondius, in collaboration with Montaser Alsabe’ and Abed Hussein, is on view at Into The Great Wide Open Festival on Vlieland, the Netherlands.

The film portrays the circumstances of people moving through landscapes shaped not only by natural forces but also by political choices. They find themselves in an existential in-between zone: the past has dissolved, the future is uncertain, and their identity is slowly being worn away. In this limbo, time loses its direction and movement itself becomes a form of survival.

The images resonate with climate change, sea-level rise, and mass displacement, presenting migration as one of their urgent consequences. At the same time, the work confronts us with societal indifference and with the underlying racism that often determines whose life is seen as worth protecting.

'Tidal Settlers' is a portrayal of the now: a search within a world that is constantly changing shape.

You can see Juul Hondius' film during Into The Great Wide Open Festival on Vlieland from 27 to 30 August.

Ulf Puder is part of the exhibition 'The Shared Now' at the Kunstmuseum Magdeburg.

In an era of rapid information dissemination, ongoing social upheaval, and rising individuality, the relationship between personal experience and collective reality is more clearly reflected in artists' works than ever before. Against the backdrop of multiple crises, the continuous negotiation between art and life is becoming an increasingly prevalent theme in art itself.

'The Shared Now' runs until 6 September, 2026.

Save the date for the opening of Maria Roosen's 'EXPRESS'!

On Friday 4 September, you are warmly invited to join us and the artist in celebrating the opening of Roosen's first exhibition at AKINCI.

Roosen shows new work in which two movements clash. The title 'EXPRESS' hints at a wordplay: the Dutch word for the conscious, purposeful and intentional ‘expres’ interacts with the English word ‘express’: what must come out, which can no longer be held back and expresses itself by any means.

Anyone familiar with Roosen’s work will recognize her visual language of the everyday, which she uses as tools for feelings. However, 'EXPRESS' speaks differently, here, gentleness is not a comfort, but an attitude and an intention. These times demand that we be outspoken. Roosen responds not with greater volume, but with greater precision. The work reveals what words can no longer convey. That is what 'EXPRESS' expresses.

At the heart of Roosen’s practice lies the act of creation. Roosen often takes her cues from real life, but reimagines that reality in a different material, scale, or setting, so that it acquires a new meaning. She draws inspiration from painting watercolors in which she investigates what is alive in this world. What asks to be explored? What holds meaning or urgency? Through this crucial act of making, which derives from an intention or a feeling, she allows the work to grow and emerge.

Sunday Book Highlight | Edwin Zwakman 'fake but accurate' 📚

At first sight, Zwakman’s pictures look like documentary photographs: landscapes, streets, lookouts, junctions. However, the book’s title leads us to the truth: they are accurate fakes, pictures of model situations the artist builds in his studio. His meticulous simulations of real situations both test our perceptive faculty and reveal the artificiality of the real world around us.
