Als verzamelaar en chroniquer van de geschiedenis van de stad Amsterdam ziet het Amsterdam Museum in The Times de juiste initiatief om hedendaagse kunstenaars bij de geschiedenis van de stad te betrekken en hen gelegenheid te bieden deze geschiedenis als inspiratiebron voor hun werk te gebruiken. In het imposante, in 1903 door Eduard Cuypers ontworpen Algemene Handelsbladgebouw aan de Nieuwezijds Voorburgwal 240 rolden de eerste kranten van de drukpers. Na het vertrek van de NRC eind jaren ‘70 stond het gebouw leeg. In een poging om het markante gebouw van de sloop te redden, werd het Algemeen Handelsblad in 1978 gekraakt. Pieter Giele en David Veldhoen stichtten er hun befaamde galerie AMOK. Zij organiseerden talloze tentoonstellingen en optredens waardoor het gebouw een cultureel middelpunt van Amsterdam werd. Deze tijdsperiode wordt in de tentoonstelling gepresenteerd Van Perskamer tot Kunstpaleis door middel van historisch fotomateriaal uit persoonlijke archieven van buurtbewoners en de documentaire De Passanten 1994 van Annegriet Wietsma. De documentaire bevat interviews met mensen die in het gebouw hebben gewoond of gewerkt. Deze Interviews met Peter Giele, David Velthoen, Herman Brood, Henk Hofland en Hans van Mierlo bieden een uitgelezen kans om het spannende verhaal dat zich hier afspeelde voor een breed publiek toegankelijk te maken. Kunst leeft op alle verdiepingen van het gebouw, letterlijk! Door werk te tonen van een selectie kunstenaars die in het pand wonen of hebben gewoond, worden verschillende generaties kunstenaars zichtbaar die hun inspiratie hebben gevonden in en rond het Algemeen Handelsbladgebouw: zoals Saar Vanden Berghe, Jan Hoek, David Veldhoen, Pieke Werner en Nicky Zwaan. The Times presents: From Newsroom to Art Palace

One of the most striking historical buildings of Amsterdam, the Algemeen Handelsblad building on the Nieuwezijds Voorburgwal resumes a cultural function. The Times, a joint initiative of the Amsterdam Museum and Donna Wolf, opens its doors with the exhibition From Newsroom to Art Palace. The exhibition shows historical material and artwork from the turbulent eighties, alongside new work by a selection of artists and residents of the Algemeen Handelsblad building. The coming months various activities, presentations and meetings will be organized at this location. Each event focuses on a different aspect of the building and everything that has happened there. As a collector and chronicler of the history of the city of Amsterdam, Amsterdam Museum sees in The Times the ideal initiative to involve contemporary artists; offering them the opportunity to take the history of the city and the building as inspiration for their work. Eduard Cuypers designed the Algemeen Handelsblad Building located at 240 Nieuwezijds Voorburgwal where, in 1903 the first newspapers rolled off the printing press. After the departure of the Algemeen Handelsblad in the late 70s the building was vacated and left empty. In an attempt to save the building from demolition the Algemeen Handelsblad building was squatted in 1978. Peter Giele and David Veldhoen founded there their famous gallery AMOK / Aorta. They organized numerous exhibitions and performances in the building, quickly becomingthe cultural center of the socially critical Amsterdam art scene. This period is presented in the exhibition From Newsroom to Art Palace through historical photographs from personal archives of local residents and the documentary The Transients (1994) by Annegriet Wietsma. The documentary includes interviews with a number of people who have lived or worked in the building. The interviews with Peter Giele, David Veldhoen, Herman Brood, Henk Hofland and Hans van Mierlo offer an excellent opportunity to make the exciting story that took place here accessible for a wider audience. Art continues to thrive here on each and every floor of the building, literally! The opening exhibition reveals how generations of artists have found their inspiration in and around the Algemeen Handelsblad Building. Work will be presented from a selection of artists who have lived here in the past or currently reside in the building: Saar Vanden Berghe, Jan Hoek, David Veldhoen, Pieke Werner and Nicky Zwaan. While artists Maze de Boer, Lawrence Bailey, Walter von Lotringen and Ivar van der Zwan visualize the current zeitgeist creating new site responsive work deepening the rich history of the building with their work.
