For this week’s Café Wednesday at Van Abbehuis, we will screen works by 𝘐𝘯𝘦𝘴 𝘒𝘰𝘤𝘪𝘫𝘢𝘯, 𝘐𝘣𝘳𝘢𝘩𝘪𝘮 𝘒𝘶𝘳𝘵, 𝘔𝘢𝘳𝘪𝘯𝘢 𝘚𝘶𝘭𝘪𝘮𝘢 & 𝘙𝘢𝘥𝘶 𝘔𝘪𝘩𝘢𝘪-𝘛ă𝘯𝘢𝘴ă.

The program follows the journeys of people, practices, and labour across Europe’s margins, reflecting on in-between identities and the unseen labour that sustains everyday life. Through routines, rituals, slower rhythms of living, and embodied traditions, these works attend to what is communicated without being spoken aloud.
Looking closely at everyday gestures and acts of repetition, the films invite us to consider the relationships between movement, work, belonging, and care, while tracing the histories and experiences embedded within ordinary acts.
Join us for the screenings and stay afterwards for a collective discussion around the themes, experiences, and questions that emerge from the works.

𝘈 𝘴𝘵𝘶𝘥𝘺 𝘰𝘧 𝘝𝘢𝘭𝘶𝘦𝘴 (after LeBrun), Stijn Peeters, 2018

A Study of Values reimagines a tapestry by Charles LeBrun showing Louis XIV visiting the Gobelin factory. Peeters replaces the craftsmen with refugees carrying children and belongings, blocked by a wall of faceless border guards - the supposed defenders of European values.

𝘏𝘰𝘮𝘰 𝘚𝘦𝘳𝘷𝘢𝘯𝘵𝘪𝘴 𝘌𝘳𝘰𝘵𝘪𝘴

The hybrid figure appears as a cleaner wearing a traditional mask from Indigenous communities in Borneo. Historically, these masks functioned as mediators between humans, ancestral spirits, and the unseen world. Kueh combines Bornean motifs with Mandarin phrases such as 发财(prosperity), 异国风味 (exotic flavour), and 服从(obedience), reflecting his position as a Chinese-Malaysian artist from Sarawak while producing a visual language where multiple cultural inheritances converge.
Through these juxtapositions, cultural identity becomes entangled with tourism, labour, and contemporary economies. These tensions mirror broader labour conditions across Southeast Asia. Kuala Lumpur remains a major centre for migrant labour, particularly in sectors associated with so-called “3D jobs,” a term derived from postwar Japanese labour discourse and later adopted globally to describe work considered “dirty, dangerous, and demeaning.”

Yes, Eleanor promised herself, I will record a daily account of my purchases and activities in one of my Marble Composition Books. Bacon, eggs, gin, co***ne: bought on such and such a day, month, year. If so, where and from whom? Did I drink enough water, eat any food, leave the apartment at all today? Yesterday? Oxygen.

Conceived as a book-as-artwork, an old Vogue magazine is reduced to pure text; stripper of visual distractions, it yields moments of concrete poetry while also revealing the generic and interchangeable language of advertising and consumer culture.

an exhibition in collaboration with Text my Sister, curated by Julia Fidder & Xenia Tsompanidou

The film explores the bat through the lens of ecology, culture, and belonging. Its research began during COVID-19, responding to the viral video of influencer Wang Mengyun, which sparked racism and xenophobia in far-right media. The film reflects on Western cultural associations of bats with evil, disease, and darkness. It follows a bat marionette named Lucifer who falls from the sky, landing at the foot of a broken limestone mountain. From there, Lucifer begins a journey to find and reunite with their fellow bats.
The work questions how fear and misinformation shape our relationship with nature. It sits at the crossroads of ecology and economy, sight and sound, alienation and belonging.

𝖮𝗇 𝗋𝖾-𝖾𝗏𝖺𝗅𝗎𝖺𝗍𝗂𝗇𝗀 𝗏𝖺𝗅𝗎𝖾 opened its doors last Thursday, an exhibition in collaboration with Text my Sister, decentralized platform for contemporary art. ↯ nl below

Julia Fidder & Xenia Tsompanidou, curators of Text my Sister, alongside director Fréderique Scholtes, introduced the different narratives that question the structures through which value and production are legitimized. The evening followed with vocal arrangements by Rianne Wilbers in co-production with De Link, an arab cassette-set by resident Moe Mustafa and a set by dj XEN.

Participating artists are gabi dao, Jakub Jansa, Marcos Kueh, Moe Mustafa and Stijn Peeters.

On re evaluating value is made possible with the support of The Arts Promotion Centre Finland (Taike), Mondriaanfonds and Cultuurfonds Noord-Brabant.

Four dance performances (un)staged and restaged

𝘗𝘰𝘭𝘺𝘱𝘵𝘺𝘤𝘩 is an hour and a half ongoing performance composed of four dance pieces - three solos and one participatory installation - divided in several rooms. The public is invited to experience each of them by wandering and following the fours performers.

In order of happening: Jacaranda: a collection by Laura López Ferrer, The Heartbeat project by Lisa Kiesgen Eugène, Did You Ever Watch a Birthday Candle Finish?by Gaia Cavagliá, A5 by Ana Paula Lemus Payiastou, with live music by Ginés Pérez Toledo.

Vier dansvoorstellingen (un)staged en restaged
𝘗𝘰𝘭𝘺𝘱𝘵𝘺𝘤𝘩 is een anderhalf uur doorlopende voorstelling, bestaande uit vier doorlopende solo’s die over verschillende ruimtes zijn verdeeld. Het publiek wordt uitgenodigd om ze te beleven door rond te dwalen door de ruimte en de vier performers te volgen.
