CREATING A NETWORK OF EUROPEAN CITIES TOWARDS A COLLECTION OF CONTEMPORARY ART MADE THROUGH CULTURE-GENERATING SCULPTURES

SPACE (Société publique d’Art contemporain-Europe/Public Society of Contemporary ArtEurope) is a project developed in 2002 by the Belgian sculptor Alain De Clerck. It is embodied by one first artworks located in Liège and then by another one in Maastricht in 2013 which aims to support artists in the creation and promotion of cross-border collection. It brings contemporary art to everyone involving in its construction the joint participation of the citizens, the authorities, the businesses and the cultural operators.

SPACE, Public Society of Contemporary Art-Europe : In the wake of developing its field of activities, SPACE wants to strengthen its presence in Belgium as well as expand itself to Europe, giving priority to Euregio and the Greater Region, providing visibility of belgian creation leaving territorial shackles. The SPACE project offers to establish different mobile sculptures in Europe. Generating culture, these artworks will be set up permanently in a highly busy public space. Turned on by the citizens thanks to the same principle of cultural ticket machine, this park of sculptures will fund the SPACE public collection, which will be spread in the various participating European cities. This unifying project is aimed both at a specialized audience (deputies of culture, museums, cultural associations, artists, …) and at a much wider audience, not necessarily interested in contemporary art at first, but who will directly or indirectly be concerned by the project (European citizens living in the host cities, participants in the festivities, new patrons, …) given the inherent dimension of participatory citizenship in the SPACE project. By multiplying its anchor points and extending its team, SPACE ensures the durability of its approach and opens up towards Europe, creating a transborder public collection, thus pursuing the goal of making contemporary art accessible to all. SPACE in Maastricht In the fall of 2011, the SPACE Collection was presented for the first time in Maastricht Brandweer : a part of the collection took place in a former fire station, while a mobile prototype of culture generator, SPACE Show, was temporarily located outside the building. The purpose of this operation is to develop euregional contacts to promote the establishment of new sculptures.

An opportunity occured when launching a call for ideas to limit the expenses of Minckelers' eternal flame . SPACE then proposed to add a generator of culture to the bronze statue so that the flame could only be triggered when a passerby decided to. On 2 December 2011, the SPACE project won the first prize so that the city joined its network of cities around the construction of a collection. Following the validation of different budgetary and technical studies, the official inauguration of the new culture generator took place on September 5 of 2013 . The chosen solution involved installing a wireless terminal and the use of photovoltaic panels to trigger the flame. The high-tech system was made by Solar- Tech and SPACE won the Caius of Audacity 2013 ( award for cultural patronage ) for this symbol of a cultural alliance strengthened between Liege and Maastricht.

The Eurocultural ticket : Since June 2012, following a partnership with Creative Drive and the Ateliers d’Art contemporain, the function of Liege's culture generator is reinforced by the system of ticket culture. With each coin, a ticket is printed which provides either a poem or a cultural gift. Since the launch of SPACE Maastricht , the system was renamed Euroculture ticket . Now, when triggering the generator in Liège or Maastricht, one may, in addition to a poem (selected by Levée de Paroles or Dichter in Beeld) win one or two ticket for cultural activities in one or the other city. A built-in interactive screen helps improve the communication.
