👩🏻‍💻🌙 Moon Bound blog post #21, the story behind the Moon Art Payload integration 🔗link in bio

On April 24th, 2025, the Moon Bound Book, alongside artworks and seeds, was integrated into a pyramid created by LifeShip — destined for the Moon’s south pole.

Read about the integration process: the place it happened, the challenges it brought, and the exciting possibilities it opened up.

The art collection included in the payload: FENUA:The last fragment by Lunar Sample Return 1 (LSR-1) by Flight Candidate #9 by Time Slices by Oceans Deep: Blue Marble by Unfinished (Hope) by .masa Copper Wire Nest by Beauty in Scale by Jessica Hunnicutt, Earthling-Conduit of Emotions by “Moon Village”: A Global Science Opera by Oded Ben-Horin, Kjetil Sømoe, Janne Robberstad.

📌 Each Wednesday, a new entry will join this unfolding conversation: artist statements, behind-the-scenes stories of sending a book to the Moon, contextualising essays about the project, and explorations of why art belongs on the Moon at all. You’ll also find personal, cultural, and spiritual reflections on humanity’s evolving relationship with our celestial companion.

The Moon Bound blog is initiated and curated by Dr. Barbara Brownie and Christopher Cokinos.

🌙 🌎 How does the Moon see the Earth?

The Moon has always had the most extraordinary view of Earth — witnessing about 4.5 billion years of our planet’s history, gazing upon every continent shift, every ocean form, and civilizations passing by.

Humans, however, haven’t seen the Earth from lunar perspective for over 50 years, and finally, the Artemis II mission gave us that view back.

A memorable visit to the Moon Bound Plovdiv Exhibition

We were honored to welcome Lakshmi Mohanbabu — an architect, designer, and multidisciplinary artist — at the Moon Bound Exhibition at the Bishop’s Basilica of Philippopolis, where her artwork Time Slices was on display.

During the visit, Lakshmi joined a podcast interview to Podtepeto Plovdiv.

Moments like these remind us of the power of art to connect, inspire, and spark conversation 💫

We extend our gratitude to and for the warm reception, and to for joining us.

“The Moon’s name is a secret; all the other moons of our Solar System (about 300) have a specific name or number, but Earth’s moon is called Moon. My page in Moon Bound expresses the concept of an unknown identity and the unknown potential for humans to live on the Moon.”

📌 Each Wednesday, a new entry will join this unfolding conversation: artist statements, behind-the-scenes stories of sending a book to the Moon, contextualising essays about the project, and explorations of why art belongs on the Moon at all. Mary Kuiper:
“During the Covid period I was promoting the MoonGallery and art to be sent to space in Dubai at the IAC.
In this photo, I am standing between Christina Koch and Jessica Meir after our conversation.
Who could have imagined that both astronauts, Jessica and Christina, would be in space at the same time, on different missions: Artemis II and SpaceX Crew-12?

Launched in July 2023, ESA’s Euclid Mission explores the nature of dark matter and dark energy. Accompanying the instruments is a unique piece of art fixed to the spacecraft—the Fingertip Galaxy plaque, with the finger marks of over 250 mission scientists and engineers, symbolising the many personal contributions to the mission and the spirit of the endeavour.

🚀🌙 Looking Back at the Artemis II Launch

Moon Gallery’s artist and collaborator Christopher Cokinos shares his experience from Florida:

“... the disjunction between years of waiting and a long travel day and a traffic jam and getting to the causeway with other NASA guests and waiting for two hours and making new friends—between all that and—the sight of the silent exhaust plume churning like a ground-hugging thunderhead and the binocular-bright orange, yellow and white of the flames gushing like some kind of waterfall made of fire, and the extremely fast rising up and arcing over, getting smaller, then the rumbling in the chest—not as loud as I expected—then the rocket up high and horizontal, crackling and popping like an American muscle car from the 1970s backfiring and backfiring...the disjunction between before the event and the actuality of it...it still sits in me like disbelief. And something like hope.”

Do you remember the first time you saw the Moon as a child? Think back to those moments of wonder.
At the Moon Bound exhibition in Plovdiv, Bulgaria, we invited children to explore a similar feeling through an art workshop — asking them: How does the Moon see the Earth?

📌 Each Wednesday, a new entry will join this unfolding conversation: artist statements, behind-the-scenes stories of sending a book to the Moon, contextualising essays about the project, and explorations of why art belongs on the Moon at all. You’ll also find personal, cultural, and spiritual reflections on humanity’s evolving relationship with our celestial companion.
