Thursday, August 21, we opened our new and beautiful exhibition THE VIKING SHIP at Bergen Maritime Museum – a result of a close and good collaboration with the University Museum of Bergen.

The exhibition highlights the many roles of the Viking ship: as a means of transport, as part of burial and sacrificial rituals, and as a cultural symbol. With a professionally grounded view on both local and international finds, we show how the ships were an integrated part of society and identity in Viking Age Norway – and in the encounter with the outside world.

🔍 The exhibition contains:
• Archaeological finds from Western Norwegian boat graves
• Imported finds from foreign cultures
• Viking ship models
• Original fragments from Viking ship finds in Western Norway

🎤 The exhibition was officially opened by the Rector at the University of Bergen, Margareth Hagen, and we thank all partners, colleagues, and visitors who contributed to a memorable opening day.

🧭 We hope the exhibition will engage and inspire further reflection around our maritime cultural heritage.

📍 Welcome – the exhibition is now open!

Earlier this year, we completed the work of registering and digitizing a large photo collection from Mjellem & Karlsen Shipyard. The collection consists of a total of 873 photographs. The images mainly depict ships built at the yard—both under construction and completed—as well as ship christenings and other events related to the shipyard's operations.

The photographs have now been given their final placement in the museum's storage. 569 of the images are available on DigitaltMuseum – making an important part of Bergen’s shipyard history accessible to the public.
