John Cage by đź“· Tom Sandberg 1985
First published in Ballade Magazine (2-3) designed by

John Cage visited Høvikodden and the Henie Onstad Art Center - ”a sage with a seemingly inexhaustible vitality”, according to Ballade’s editorial writer. Tom Sandberg’s images from this meeting are today considered among the photographer’s most famous.

Right up until the mid-1980s, remained the signature behind Ballade’s two-color covers, whether they were characterized by geometric play on form, as they most often were, or by portraits of one of the many modernist composers - both Norwegian and international - who would come to be particularly central to Ballade’s profile.

EXHIBITION WEEKEND
Silkscreen posters by 1978
Silkscreen printing is a time-consuming process since each colour in the design requires a separate stencil, and each colour must be applied separately and yes it takes time to perfect the technique. The stencil used for these posters was a cut and paste work which was pretty common in the late 70’s. These magnificent handmade prints have lush, thick, opaque ink with very bright colours and benefit from being seen live. Come inside the gallery and meet Terje who will be in the gallery this weekend.

Phil Spector International on 7inch.

Bolstered by success with George Harrison and John Lennon, Spector returned with force to be reckoned with in mid 1970s. A deal with Warner Bros US gave him his own Warner-Spector label.
Created for new music (Leonard Cohen etc) and reissue productions. Shortly after the US deal a license deal for re-issues and new Spector recordings with Cher, Darlene Love, Danny Potter, and Jerri Bo Keno was signed with Polydor UK. This UK label was named Phil Spector international. Included in the deal was the new Dion album ”Born To Be With You” (a great album that never saw a release in the States).

Primal Screams Bobby Gillespie on Dion ”Born To Be With You” single.

”It’s absolutely beautiful, isn’t it? It’s almost like a New Orleans funeral march. You just imagine it’s raining and it’s really hot and sticky and there’s a huge procession of people with top hats and umbrellas doing the Second-Line dance.”

Swipe left for suggested singles to pick up. They all come recommended, lot’s of magnificent tracks here.

Dead Moon poster from Tombstone Records. One of Oregon’s truly most independent and revered Northwest underground bands.

Fred Cole began his recording career in 1964 with The Lords, and the single Ain’t Got No Self-Respect. Fred’s next band The Weeds released a 7” before being renamed The Lollipop Shoppe (2-4) to avoid confusion with The Seeds (with who they shared a manager). Their 1968 burner You Must Be a Witch was released by Uni Records and eventually landed on the first Nuggets anthology box set.

In 1987, after years spent playing in and releasing records by a dizzying succession of bands, Fred and wife Toody recruited Andrew Loomis to play drums for their new band Dead Moon that would be stripped to its rawest essentials. They formed Tombstone Records and began releasing a slew of unforgettable home-recorded gems starting in 1988 with their first 7inch of the oft-covered Parchment Farm and Hey Joe, followed closely by the Don’t Burn the Fires 7inch and the full-length In The Graveyard. Fred would cut the vinyl masters to nearly Dead Moon’s entire catalog with a birthday present from Toody: the same 1954 mono lathe used to cut the The Kingsmen’s “Louie Louie.”

THE BLANK GENERATION EP. Previously released on ORK Records in the US and Stiff Records in the UK in 1976. When signing up with Sire and having the debut album out in 1977 this good looking 12inch was released prior the album.

Malcolm McLaren claimed that the S*x Pistols’ song ”Pretty Vacant” was directly inspired by ”Blank Generation”.

Malcolm McLaren “I came back to England determined. I had these images I came back with, it was like Marco Polo or Walter Raleigh. I brought back the image of this distressed, strange thing called Richard Hell. And this phrase, ’the blank generation’. Richard Hell was a definite, 100 percent inspiration, and, in fact, I remember telling the S*x Pistols, ’Write a song like Blank Generation, but write your own bloody version,’ and their own version was ’Pretty Vacant’.” —Malcolm McLaren in an interview in Please Kill Me, the Uncensored Oral History of Punk, Legs McNeil and Gillian McCain, Grove Press (1996)

NME ad July 22nd 1978
For the front cover photomosaic Byrne and Waymouth took 529 close-up Polaroid photographs on the roof of the loft building in Long Island City that Frantz and Weymouth lived in. The Polaroid mosaic was executed by artist Jimmy De Sana.

Of the album title, Weymouth told Creem in a 1979 interview:
When we were making this album I remembered this stupid discussion we had about titles for the last album. At that time I said, ’What are we gonna call an album that’s just about buildings and food?’ And Chris said, ’You call it more songs about buildings and food.’

XTC frontman Andy Partridge later claimed, however, that he gave the title to Byrne.

Don’t miss out on excellent ongoing program of the catalogue. Superbly boxed and produced by Jason Jones
