Last week, we welcomed representatives from Oslo kommune to and , where we discussed the role of small and mid-sized art institutions and the importance they hold for artists locally, nationally, and internationally.

At , the director shared an analogy: “You don’t move from McDonald’s to becoming CEO of Nordea overnight.” The point was to highlight the importance of the opportunities, experiences, and stepping stones that exist between those two positions — emphasising the vital role that small and mid-sized art institutions play within the arts field.

Thank you for for the collaboration and for raising these important questions with us. Thanks to the politicians and Oslo administration for the visit; Ola Wolff Elvevold , Øyvind Håbrekke, Eivor Evenrud , Rauand Ismail , Per-Trygve Hoff , Ismail Ali Hussein .hussein, Anna Dåsnes , Chiara Cavalleri , Arina Aamir .aamir, Bjørgulv Vinje Borgundvaag og Stein Ole Kolstad Varhaug .

Join us for the final day of the group exhibition, marking a transition in the unfolding of the programme Lessons in Love. Meet some of the artists and encounter the artworks that have moved, spread out and emerged since the opening on 14 February.

At 2 PM, you can enjoy love songs performed by Akerselva Kvinnekor while sharing vegan soup. All sales from the UKS kitchen and bookshop will be donated to aid organisations in Lebanon.

Lessons in Love is an exhibition and a year-long programme that straddles individuality and community in a multitude of ways. In the programme’s first unfolding, each artist was invited to introduce themselves through one or several recent works, presented at UKS as part of a group exhibition – a shifting landscape of sentiment spanning the terrains of grief, longing, devotion, and generosity.

During the fall and winter of 2026/2027, all participating artists will share new commissions at UKS. Welcome back in October to encounter their practices in different forms and paces.

As an exhibition and a year-long programme, Lessons in Love straddles individuality and community in a multitude of ways – firstly, through a moving, pulsating show that changes over the course of the exhibition period, introducing the invited artists to develop new work at UKS in 2026. In this first chapter of the programme, each artist was invited to introduce themselves through one or several recent works of art which will be dynamically presented at UKS in a shifting landscape of sentiment, spanning the terrains of grief, longing, devotion and generosity.

Grief, and perhaps desperation, is embedded in Jessica Williams’ works unknown unknowns (2025) and I find myself (2012/2022/2026), the latter a recovered steel band with the inscription: ‘I find myself simultaneously drawn to and repelled by the sheer quantity of man-made objects in this world’. unknown unknowns is a series of brick sculptures placed across the exhibition space, made from materials, or debris, recovered from the artist’s home, local forests and beaches. Eerily attractive, the sculptures are a form of mending in an ongoing planetary crisis.

Minne Kersten’s Where I’m Calling From (2024), originally conceived as a filmset, refers to a kind of cinematic architecture that can beckon spectres, ghosts and phantoms. The film was shot around nightfall, when light and vision fade and nocturnal butterflies, or moths, appear. The moth represents a shift between endings and beginnings; living at night and often losing its life when chasing enthralling sources of light.

As Silent As Bombs experiments with kinaesthetic approaches to sound and is structured through data-driven visual frameworks. The data-based composition addresses military violations and sonic fear within contemporary geopolitical tensions involving China, Taiwan, Ukraine, Russia and the United States.

The piece translates visualised datasets – including the frequency of Chinese military provocations in Taiwanese airspace, military expenditure and fossil fuel consumption per capita – into sound to interrogate collective narratives, power relations and shared histories.

As Silent As Bombs was created in 2022 – 24 and was previously presented at Ultima Oslo Contemporary Music Festival, Tegnetriennalen and Oslo Negativ.

The performance is part of Lessons in Love.

ABOUT
Wei Ting Tseng was born in Taiwan and is based in Oslo. She plays the cello, composes, listens and rarely separates one from the other. Tseng moves freely between contemporary, improvised and early music and is drawn to how sound bends space. Her artistic practice researches listening as a relational, ethical and spatial act, exploring how sound reveals the politics of presence, memory and care.

The social sculpture SeSiSå (2022) by Jacky Jaan-Yuan Kuo and Wei Ting Tseng working as a duo brings together the whole community with their publication and installation. Originally an installation and a workshop-based exhibition held at TENTHAUS in Oslo, the work brought together children from Møllergata skole in Oslo, where a majority of pupils have mixed cultural and linguistic backgrounds. Through sound, they explored experiences of migration, being misunderstood and (mis)heard, in a safe and caring environment. The work presented in Lessons in Love represents this ephemeral piece through a collection of documentation and a sonic sculpture.
