John 20:11-18 NIV
[11] Now Mary stood outside the tomb crying. As she wept, she bent over to look into the tomb [12] and saw two angels in white, seated where Jesus’ body had been, one at the head and the other at the foot. [13] They asked her, “Woman, why are you crying?” “They have taken my Lord away,” she said, “and I don’t know where they have put him.” [14] At this, she turned around and saw Jesus standing there, but she did not realize that it was Jesus. [15] He asked her, “Woman, why are you crying? Who is it you are looking for?” Thinking he was the gardener, she said, “Sir, if you have carried him away, tell me where you have put him, and I will get him.” [16] Jesus said to her, “Mary.” She turned toward him and cried out in Aramaic, “Rabboni!” (which means “Teacher”). [17] Jesus said, “Do not hold on to me, for I have not yet ascended to the Father. Go instead to my brothers and tell them, ‘I am ascending to my Father and your Father, to my God and your God.’ ” [18] Mary Magdalene went to the disciples with the news: “I have seen the Lord!” And she told them that he had said these things to her.

Day 1 of building a daily painting habit.

Work has been pretty stressful and overwhelming lately. I've been feeling too tired to paint but I want to get back into it because the process of painting helps my mind decompress.

I'm going to challenge myself to paint for at least 20 minutes a day, starting today. I want to commit that time each day to myself and my well-being.

I hope you'll join me in this challenge and follow along!

Thanks for being here 😌

I enjoyed working on this quaint spring scene - a commission for a customer who loves repurposing teapots into planters in her garden!

Building my entryway gallery wall one art piece at a time!

I love hanging up my paintings - each one brings me back to when I took the initial reference photo and how I felt standing in awe of the memories I wanted to capture. Painting these scenes holds more meaning to me because I get to spend time with the painting as I'm reminded of all the memories I made along the way.

If you could visit anywhere in the world, where would it be? For me, I would love to go back to the Lofoten Islands!

I'm still riding the high from visiting the Lofoten islands a year and a half ago. The Norwegian landscapes are breathtaking, and I loved the quaint rorbuer (fisherman cabins) positioned in front of the jagged peaks.

I painted this a couple weeks ago during a snow day here in Kansas City. I have had this painting on my mind for quite some time and I'm so pleased that it's now on paper!

I'm working on getting my space ready to create prints for sale, so stay tuned for that!

Sent this commissioned piece off today! I love painting pieces like this because they capture how much a person means to someone. My customer commissioned this piece for her new granddaughter and I think that is so sweet - new life in this world that is already bursting with love and beauty.

Sharing the photo I used as my reference for my rorbuer painting!

I started off by doing a light sketch of the objects in the reference photo. I then went in with a light wash of color, wet on wet, as my first layer to start visualizing the direction the rest of the painting will take. Then, it's all about building layers of paint, one layer at a time. The beauty of watercolor is that each layer can either be fluid with wet on wet, or very detailed with wet on dry. As you add layers you build the saturation, shadow, and the objects in the painting start to take shape.

I thoroughly enjoyed painting this in our rorbu in Norway, and the experience of this painting is something I'll not soon forget!

I painted this scene based on the view from the dock outside our rorbu in Reine, Norway. I had just begun my watercolor journey and knew I wanted to paint something while we were there, so I was sure to pack my supplies with me for the trip.

The Lofoten Islands showcase some of the most majestic landscapes I've ever seen - mountains jutting out of the water, winding roads, sparkling blue waters. Simply everywhere I looked took my breath away.

I was joined by my husband and friends in our rented rorbu as I painted this scene. I used a picture as reference and something I didn't notice until returning to the US was my interpretation of the photo - in reality, the rorbu closest to the viewer is not yellow, but red. But, somehow as I used the photo as reference, I saw yellow and so that's what I painted - making this a one of a kind painting in my own interpretation of the beautiful Reine rorbuer.

Welcome to Fernweh & Light

My name is Anya and I paint watercolors inspired by places I've been and moments I want to remember. This page is where I'll be sharing my work and the stories behind it.

Fernweh (pronounced "fairn-vay") is a German word that describes a longing for distant places, and Light reflects the beauty and quiet presence found throughout God's creation.

Follow along with me through this journey of sharing God's beauty through art.
