DOTMASTERS for NUART FESTIVAL

You'll find a whole host of new works in unusual places this year. Many, if not all, are on unsanctioned walls and sites. Something we thought important this year, no risk, no story. We hope the quality of these shots and the innocence of many of the motifs make up for this minor transgression, which in our hearts, is key to what constitutes genuine street art.

OCCUPYING THE GREY AREA

We have a whole bunch, swarm, shoal or whatever a group of stencil artists are called, in town at the moment. Occupying the grey area between right and wrong, to buff or not to buff, that is the question. This revolution in public art was built on the simple stencil, and the idea that the public, not the powers that be, would get to decide whether to support this new form of art or not. They voted in their millions to suppoort it, by applauding, sharing and ultimately buying it, creating a whole new field of study and creative industry in the process. Art by the people for the people.

CANEVIL (NZ/NO) for NUART STAVANGER
Next up is this fabulously playful stencil from Canevil on Sangesands Gata opposite the children's playground. A reminder to all of us, not just the kids, that the city can be your playground. These types of works are often criticised and dismissed by more traditional educated artists and critics as being void of serious content and unmoored from art history, but for many of us, this is the point, this is where much of the power in street art lay.
