To***co in Ilocos: A Brief Historical Glimpse
To***co has played a significant role in the history and economy of the Ilocos region since the Spanish colonial period, particularly during the To***co Monopoly (1782โ€“1882), when Ilocano farmers were required to cultivate the crop for government trade. The regionโ€™s climate proved ideal for to***co growing, and over time, it became a major source of livelihood, shaping local agricultural practices and community life. Even after the monopoly ended, to***co farming persisted, with traditional curing and drying methods passed down through generations.
This connection to to***co is also reflected in local heritage sites such as the Juan Luna Shrine in Badoc, Ilocos Norte. The ancestral house of Juan and Antonio Luna, the houseโ€™s lower ground floor once served as a storage area for to***co, offering a glimpse into everyday practices during that time. In line with the 2026 celebration of National Heritage Month, such histories are given renewed attention, emphasizing the importance of preserving cultural sites and remembering industries that shaped regional identity.

As Museo nina Juan at Antonio Luna joins the celebration of Heritage Month 2026, this hand-painted sneakers features the house of Luna Family together with the iconic welcome arc of Ilocos Norte. The design highlights two meaningful symbols of local history and local pride through contemporary art. This National Heritage Month 2026, the NHCP continues its series on historical markers connected to the Year of Philippine Diplomatic History and Diaspora under the Dekada ng Kasaysayan ng Pilipinas.

Our next feature is the 1957 historical marker for the Birthplace of Juan Luna y Novicio in Badoc, Ilocos Norte. The marker honors Luna as a patriot and foremost Filipino painter whose life and work reached beyond the Philippines through his studies and artistic achievements in Europe, his association with Filipino reformers abroad, and his later service in the diplomatic work of the First Philippine Republic.

Records of the Philippine Historical Committee show that the Badoc marker formed part of the commemorative preparations for the Luna Centennial. The Committee had earlier acted on a proposed Luna memorial in Badoc and noted a related memorial proposal in Barcelona, Spain. By 1957, the new inscription for the Badoc marker was approved in connection with the centennial, linking Lunaโ€™s birthplace to the wider history of Filipino achievement, reform, and representation overseas.
