“The Master has finished its last carved of masterpiece”
With hearts brimming with appreciation and respect, we honor a visionary artist, a dedicated mentor, and a proud Baleten – on; Cultural Master Cipriano “Peri” Legaspi Lachica (1946 – 2025). The enhanced School of Living Traditions – Baeay Baleten – on and got chosen as Cultural Master for Ati wood art carving. A man of limitless imagination and fervor, Cip converted everyday items into remarkable works of art, showcasing the concealed beauty in things frequently ignored.
A Fine Arts graduates from FEATI University and a passionate fan of National Artist Fernando Amorsolo, Cip decided to leave the fast – paced life of Manila in the 1970s to adopt the tranquility of Balete, his beloved home town. In the serene haven of his studio, he infused his spirit into his paintings, producing enduring works that now adorn the family’s Art Gallery. His artistic path went further than just paint and brush; he gathered artifacts, antiques, and even discarded items – revitalizing them through his unmatched creativity.
His private garden, carefully decorated with his stone sculptures and repurposed artworks, transformed into a realm of amazement and creativity. Although initially meant for his family, its magic could not be restrained. Friends, guest, and art lovers were all attracted to its allure, enchanted by the artistry that thrived inside. Eventually, this formerly quiet retreat evolved into the famous Basura Garden – a vibrant symbol of Cip’s talent for turning the mundane into the remarkable.
In addition to his personal artistic pursuits, Cip served as a generous mentor, fostering young artists through summer art courses from 1996 to 2005. His love for the arts and steadfast commitment to his work brought him various honors, such as Outstanding Baleten – on (Visual Arts) in 2002, Third Place in the Pampanga Parol Décor Contest in 1994, and the First Prize in the Department of Tourism Native Parol Contest in 1986. Nevertheless, for Cip, the most fulfilling reward was witnessing creativity thrive in the souls.
His legacy endures – not just via his own acclaimed works but also through the artistic successes of his children and the numerous individuals he inspired. The Basura garden, initially a simple dream, now serves as a permanent homage to his creativity, resourcefulness, and love for his community.
To Sir Cipriano “Peri” Lachica, a person who recognized beauty in what others dismissed as waste, who fostered creativity in all its manifestations, and who bequeathed a garden rich not only in art but also in inspiration. Rest well sir, you have stroked the good artwork and created the best masterpiece.
