This activity aims to raise awareness about the invaluable contributions of women in the field of archaeology—highlighting their roles in research, fieldwork, conservation, and the interpretation of archaeological finds that help piece together our nation’s story. Through engaging presentations and insightful discussions, participants will gain a deeper appreciation of how the Butuan Archaeological Project continues to uncover the rich cultural heritage of the region and promote inclusivity in heritage work.

For everyone’s safety, the National Museum of the Philippines – Butuan (NMP-Butuan) will be temporarily closed to the public following the magnitude 6.2 earthquake with an epicenter in General Luna, Surigao del Norte, and reported Intensity IV in Agusan del Norte today, October 17, 2025 (Friday), at around 7:03 AM.

This precautionary closure allows for thorough safety inspections of our museum buildings and facilities to ensure the continued safety of our visitors, staff, and collections. The reopening of the museum will be announced once inspections are completed and safety clearances are issued.

We sincerely apologize for the inconvenience and thank you for your understanding.

About your NM-Eastern Northern Mindanao Regional Museum

The Eastern-Northern Mindanao Regional Museum, is one of the facilities of the #NationalMuseumPH in the country. Located in Butuan City, the #NMenmrm serves as a repository of the archaeological artifacts proving Butuan’s prehistoric existence and active participation during maritime Asian trade 1,000 years ago. It also showcases the cultural materials of the ethno-linguistic groups inhabiting the region namely, Manobo, Mamanwa, Higaonon and lowland Butuanons.

Under the Regional Administration and Operations Division (RAOD) of the NMP, the ENMRM promotes cultural heritage and cultural awareness through its exhibitions, conduct and implement education programs on heritage promotions, assists NMP field personnel in the conduct of research activities on Archaeology and Ethnology and other fields of discipline, and provide linkages with the local government units (LGUs) and other stakeholders in the region.

The Museum was established after the accidental discovery of archaeological materials by the City Engineering Office of Butuan City in 1974 while draining the water confined inside a man-made river system. Succeeding excavations conducted by the National Museum, yielded tremendous archaeological finds of collectors’ value. The most significant finds were prehistoric balangays or Butuan boats that date from 7th to 10th century. The NMP conducted scientific research, sending its archaeologists and researchers at Ambangan, Libertad.

The establishment of the museum was facilitated through the support of the Butuan Museum Foundation, Inc. which was organized to assist the NMP to safeguard and preserve the rich cultural heritage of the region.

Then President Ferdinand E. Marcos authorized the release of four units of Marcos-type school buildings while the city government donated a two-hectare lot, to realize the construction of the building. After 19 months, the formal inauguration finally took place on August 30, 1978.

The museum initially focused on the archaeological artifacts recovered by the National Museum in Butuan City and the material culture of the ethno-linguistic groups inhabiting the region.

Considering its archaeological importance, in the year 1980, the Balangay Site Museum was also constructed at Ambangan, Libertad, Butuan City to house the remains of the ancient boats, Butuan Boat No. 1 and other artifacts/material culture.

As of writing, the Museum houses three (3) galleries, namely, Archaeology, Ethnology, and Fine Arts.

“Ginikanan/Gigikanan(Parent/Origin) is the exhibit title of the Archaeology Gallery which features the material culture of pre-Hispanic people of Butuan. The highlight collections of the exhibit are the following: Artifacts of Balangay No. 5 (National Cultural Treasure), Clay Crucible (NCT), Ritual Figurines, Secondary Jar Burials, Specimens from Bequibell Shell Midden and Libertad Excavation Site, Trade Ceramics, Earthenwares, Glass Beads, and Ornaments.

In the Ethnology Gallery, entitled “Ambangan”, we exhibit the different indigenous communities such as Butuanons, Manobos, Higaonons, and Mamanwas, through the contemporary implements they use for survival like gold panning, fishing, farming, weaving, crafting, food gathering, etc. and the food products yielded such as local starch and wine. Also included are their musical instruments.

Currently, the Museum is also exhibiting until November 15, 2020, 30 photographs taken by multi-awarded and 2011 National Geographic Photo Contest winner photographer George Tapan. The photos reflect the different IP women from the different regions in the archipelago. The exhibit is entitled, “Craft as Women’s Art”.

Like all the other facilities of the NMP, the ENMRMSO is open to the public from Tuesday to Sunday at 8:30 AM to 5:00 PM. The Regional Museum is located at Brgy. Doongan, Butuan City. Its near landmarks are Butuan City Hall, Balanghai Hotel, and Weegols Garden Restaurant.

Butuan City may be reached by air via Philippine Airlines and Cebu Pacific as there are already daily regular flights from Manila and Cebu. Butuan can also be reached via four to six- hour ride by bus or land vehicle from Cagayan de Oro City which is 180 kms from Butuan. Another alternative route is to fly to Davao City, a distance about 220 kms from Butuan and a six to eight-hour trip by bus or land vehicle.

By sea. Butuan has boat connections with various Visayan ports and Manila. Most ships go to the port of Nasipit, Agusan del Norte which is 18 kms west of the city.
