Joya Gallery of the University of the Philippines Cebu is a student-run gallery under the Fine Arts Program, aiming to provide a platform for collaboration between the local community of artists, academe, and the general public. The gallery provides exhibition opportunities, especially for y

oung emerging artists who want to expand their art careers as they present contemporary modes of expression and experimentation in art making. Furthermore, the gallery aims to become a center for research and knowledge production through organized talks, discussions, art workshops, and trainings promoting appreciation, critique, and valuation of local art. It serves as an academic learning facility that supports research initiatives by faculty and students, especially in the fields of local art history and criticism, art management and curatorial studies.

Last March 26 at the Jose T. Joya Gallery, B**g Ramilo discussed his book, The Community Is the Artist: A Democratic Imagination of Community Arts, attended by faculty and students from the College of Communication, Art, and Design.

The book discussion centered on the theme of democratizing art, enabling communities to become active participants in cultural and artistic innovation, rather than merely being spectators of artistic practice. For the lived experiences of the community constitute culture, reimagining arts through a communitarian lens fosters inclusivity and genuine representation.

The Community Is the Artist: A Democratic Imagination of Community Arts

Last March 26 at The Joya Gallery Sanctum, we gathered for an afternoon of dialogue with B**g Ramilo as he discussed his book on community arts. The talk brought together faculty and students from Communication, Production Design, and Studio Arts—exploring how art and communication intersect through collective practice and shared experience.

We were honored to have UP Cebu Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs Ms. Palmy Pe-Tudtud deliver the welcoming remarks, with Dr. Laya Gonzales moderating the discussion.

At the heart of the conversation was a powerful idea, creative agency can be decentralized. Communities are not just audiences, they are active co-creators of meaning, culture, and artistic production.

Thank you to everyone who joined us in reimagining what art can be when the community takes the lead.

Mixed markers reproduced on photo paper from “Rhythms of Cebu in 2025” by Jogen P. Mil welcome viewers into the alleyway, followed by the works of Maria Libre–del Socorro, which reflect Filipino street life through dreamlike imagery. These include the pastel on paper “Sa Ibabaw, Sa Sulod, Sa Culvert” and the mosaic-like oil pastel work “Wind Blown.” Also featured are “Tsang” by Gina Pestano and the shell mosaic on wood panel “Disgraced” by Lhee Taneo.

The next panel presents a grounded sense of nationalism and critique of contemporary issues through Barb Godinez’s “Bayang Magiliw” and the triangular acrylic-on-canvas piece “Tatsulok” by Pierre Famador.

The final panel features human portraits, including an elder in “Candle Vendor” by Efren Enolva, a seated young girl in this acrylic animation “Stillness in Motion” by Drizz, and a depiction of Jesus Christ in “Christ the King” by Russel Managbanag.

A mix of textures and styles fills the alleyway, featuring woven wire on stainless steel and a wood frame with textile backing in “Resonance” by Jasper Micah C. Montes. Alongside it is “Consolidated and Adjacent 9” by Ronyel Compra, created with acrylic, charcoal, pastel, and paper collages on gessoed heavy canvas. Meanwhile, abstract acrylic works are spotted from the “Six Movements of Integration Series” and “Divided: Setting in Germany” by Bernolflores.

Adding to this are the acrylic painting “The Burden Is Heavy, The Fall Is Sweet” by Palmy Pe-Tudtud, the pig iconography in “Abundance” by Kenichi Wani, and works influenced by futurism and surrealism, including “INC” by Thomas Jopson, “Cream” by Daot, “Undead” by Gadu Duaso, and “Cracked Open” by Lean Reboja.

Stories breathe through hardwood and canvas as you wander through this corner of the gallery. A torso carved from dark wood, “Pain & Beyond” by Jose Brillo “Jobril” Villaver, stands in quiet anguish, its twisted grain holding years of unspoken weight.

Adjacent to it, a small boy in kinetic artwork in mixed media, “Ahh! Tae!” by Jayboy Aterrado, gazes outward with the wide-eyed honesty only childhood can carry.

Jess Codeniera’s “Leaving a Mark”, stone cracked open, ink spilling out, reminds us that even the hardest surfaces leave something behind.
