Jose T. Joya Gallery is a student-run gallery under the UP Cebu Fine Arts Program, open to the artists, the academe, and the public.

Joya Gallery of the University of the Philippines Cebu is a student-run gallery under the Fine Arts Program, aiming to provide a platform for collaboration between the local community of artists, academe, and the general public. The gallery provides exhibition opportunities, especially for young emerging artists who want to expand their art careers as they present contemporary modes of expression and experimentation in art making. Furthermore, the gallery aims to become a center for research and knowledge production through organized talks, discussions, art workshops, and trainings promoting appreciation, critique, and valuation of local art. It serves as an academic learning facility that supports research initiatives by faculty and students, especially in the fields of local art history and criticism, art management and curatorial studies.

As part of the opening of 𝗗𝗲𝘀𝗰𝗲𝗻𝗱𝗮𝗻𝘁𝘀 𝗩: 𝗔𝗿𝗰𝗵𝗶𝘃𝗲𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝗙𝗲𝗲𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗴𝘀, the Jose T. Joya Gallery warmly welcomes special guests and performance whose artistry and presence brings the exhibition's ideas to life. Through drag, movement, and performance, the Ballroom Culture of Cebu, along with Sheng Mai, bring q***r expression into full motion, carrying gestures and experiences through the body, lying beyond visual archives.

Representing the heart of Cebu’s ballroom scene, 𝐁𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐫𝐨𝐨𝐦 𝐂𝐮𝐥𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞 𝐨𝐟 𝐂𝐞𝐛𝐮 embodies a community built on self-expression, identity, and chosen family. In ballroom, every walk, pose, and performance carries its own story, preserving memories and feelings through movement. Ballroom Culture of Cebu brings this living archive of q***r expression into the gallery, where the body itself becomes a vessel for what is remembered and felt.

Joining them is 𝐌𝐬. 𝐒𝐡𝐞𝐧𝐠 𝐌𝐚𝐢, a queen whose work moves between drag, dance, athleticism, and political expression. Beyond commanding the stage, Sheng Mai uses movement and performance to engage with identity, resistance, and visibility, showing how drag can hold both celebration and statement. With every beat and gesture, she turns performance into a space where artistry and conviction meet.

𝐃𝐞𝐬𝐜𝐞𝐧𝐝𝐚𝐧𝐭𝐬 𝐕: 𝐀𝐫𝐜𝐡𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐬 𝐨𝐟 𝐅𝐞𝐞𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐠𝐬

Now in its fifth iteration, with the theme "𝐀𝐫𝐜𝐡𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐬 𝐨𝐟 𝐅𝐞𝐞𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐠𝐬", Descendants invites artists to explore where q***r Filipino history goes when it is denied a paper trail. Drawing on Ann Cvetkovich’s idea of the “archive of feelings”, a marginalized community’s experience isn’t preserved in official documents, the archive migrates elsewhere – into feeling, memory, performance, gesture, trauma, oral history, personal ephemera. Grief, desire, shame, joy, rage become the documents.

A photograph, a diary, a drag performance, a tattoo, a scar, a shared meal, a whispered family story about a strange unmarried relative, these too carry historical weight even though many may not consider them "primary sources." For Descendants, artworks are not illustrations of history, they are the archive. Painting, video, textile, and performance pieces emerging and merging into the archival means that the obscured lives of Filipino q***r individuals may soon find tangible form and take on layers of meaning that reveals a rich and sustained role in the making of Filipino history and culture.

Descendants is a q***r art exhibition first staged in 2019 at Frida Gallery in Bacolod City. A first of its kind, it was an initiative conceived by artist Ginoe and artist-curator Jay Jore. It aimed at bringing together q***r artists in the Visayas to address the need for representation and visibility of experiences and identities that have historically been marginalized in Philippine art. The exhibition allows for the articulation of unique perspectives and personal narratives by Filipino artists who are making sense and navigating through their experience of q***rness.

The exhibition will open to the public on October 2, 2026, 6:00 PM at the Jose T. Joya Gallery, University of the Philippines Cebu, Lahug, Cebu City and is on view until October 20, 2026.

𝐈𝐍 𝐏𝐇𝐎𝐓𝐎𝐒 | 9th annual 1081 Exhibit at the Jose Joya Gallery

History takes on different forms as the 1081 Exhibit at the Jose Joya Gallery of UP Cebu brings together several multimedia artworks and visual expressions, serving as lens of the atrocious realities of the Filipinos under the Martial Law regime. The exhibit was formally commenced last September 16, 2026.

With “𝐀𝐧𝐠 𝐊𝐚𝐦𝐚𝐭𝐮𝐨𝐫𝐚𝐧 𝐓𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐰𝐚𝐥𝐚 𝐬𝐚 𝐊𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐢𝐭𝐧𝐠𝐢𝐭” as its theme, the exhibit carves space for stories that deserve to be remembered and carried beyond the pages of our narratives. Exhibitors across different organizations relay these stories to hold truth and keep collective memory alive.

The exhibition is currently open to the public and will run until September 25, 2026 on the 2nd Floor, Undergraduate Building (CCAD), UP Cebu, Gorordo Avenue.

HIGHLIGHTS | A recap of the opening reception of the annual 1081 Exhibition on September 16, 2026. Each September, the 1081 Exhibition is a month-long initiative commemorating the victims of the Martial Law era. The exhibition is open for viewing and runs until September 21, 2026.

JOSE T. JOYA AWARDS 2026 FINALISTS AT TUBO ART FAIR 🎨

The Jose T. Joya Gallery proudly presents the seven finalists of the 49th Jose T. Joya Awards, whose works are featured in this year's Tubo Art Fair exhibition.

These artists represent the vanguard of contemporary Cebuano visual arts, each offering a distinct visual language that interrogates themes of labor, memory, faith, identity, and the natural world.

From rust-dyed textiles and reclaimed boat fragments to air-dry clay and hyperrealist portraiture, the finalists demonstrate the breadth and depth of artistic practice nurtured within the UP Cebu community.

We invite you to engage with their works and witness the continued legacy of the Jose T. Joya Awards in championing emerging Filipino artists.

THE FINALISTS

1. Dwayne Canoy - Panata (Oil on canvas, 60 x 91 cm, 2026), Intable (Non-sag epoxy on bangka fragments, 60 x 91 cm, 2026)
- A bas-relief sculpture from discarded boat fragments and a candlelit portrait exploring faith and community in Bantayan.

2. Geremie Tubo - Punday Guba Landscape (Repurposed materials, 61 x 61 cm, 2026)
- An assemblage of repurposed materials forming a landscape of decay and renewal.

3. Dorothy Ouano - Pahuway Sa Hapon (Acrylic on canvas, 50 x 40 cm, 2025)
- A meditation on working-class exhaustion and the dignity found in rest.

4. Vince Tesing - I Will Carry Your Dream (Oil on canvas, 60 x 91 cm, 2025)
- A realist portrait of mentorship and the passing of dreams between generations.

5. Jasper Villacin - no mud, no lotus (Mixed media on glass, 26 x 18 cm, 2026), la foi (Mixed media on glass, 26 x 18 cm, 2026)
A reflection on creation, spirituality, and the blurred boundaries between physical and virtual spaces.

6. Rhou Ann Lopez - Daydreams II (Mixed media on canvas, 60 x 60 cm, 2026)
- An imagined landscape built from paint and collected organic materials.

7. Samantha N. Sanchez - Dreamscape (Air-dry clay on canvas, 60 x 60 cm, 2026)
- An exploration of the unconscious through clay, texture, and form.
