Today, we celebrate the birth of Benedicto Cabrera, better known as "๐๐ž๐ง๐‚๐š๐›."

A graduate of the University of the Philippines College of Fine Arts, Cabrera rose to prominence as a painter and printmaker, with works exhibited throughout the Philippines, Asia, Europe, and the United States. He is best known for his 'Sabel' series, where his masterful use of drapery and movement turned a displaced scavenger into an iconic representation of the Filipino identity and human resilience. In recognition of his contributions to Philippine art, he received the Gawad CCP Para sa Sining in 1992 and the National Artist of the Philippines for Visual Arts in 2006.

In 2009, he established the BenCab Museum in Baguio City, a space dedicated to preserving and showcasing Cordillera indigenous art alongside contemporary Philippine works.

Through his art and cultural advocacy, BenCab continues to shape the countryโ€™s artistic and cultural landscape.

Today, we celebrate the birthday of Filipino social realist artist Renato Habulan.

Born in 1953 and raised in a working-class family in Tondo, Habulan developed an early awareness of the struggles of workers and marginalized communities. He graduated from the University of the East School of Fine Arts in 1976 and became a founding member of Kaisahan, a collective of socially committed artists.

A key figure in Philippine social realism during the 1970s and 1980s, Habulan is recognized as one of the notable painters of the Marcos era. His works portray laborers, farmers, and the urban poor, reflecting both hardship and collective strength. He is also an active member of the Concerned Artists of the Philippines, engaging in community-based art initiatives.

In the collection of the Bulwagan ng Dangal University Heritage Museum is his work Portrait of Professor Steve Villaruz (2005), an ๐˜ข๐˜ญ๐˜ญ๐˜ข ๐˜ฑ๐˜ณ๐˜ช๐˜ฎ๐˜ข oil on canvas measuring 71.9 ร— 57.1 cm.

Through his art, Habulan continues to give voice to the struggles and aspirations of the Filipino people.

Today, we celebrate the birthday of multi-awarded Filipino artist Jonahmar Salvosa.

Born 1953 in Calabanga, Camarines Sur, Salvosa is the son of Consorcia Aguilar and Amaro Salvosa. His father, who studied under Fernando Amorsolo at the University of the Philippines (UP) School (now College) of Fine Arts, provided an early exposure in art. Later, Jonahmar likewise enrolled at the UP CFA.

As early as 1961, Jonahmar won an art contest at the University of Nueva Caceres in Naga City. This foreshadowed his aptitude in both watercolor and on-the-spot painting competitions. He has since received at least 32 more awards and recognitions. Among these include the grand prize in the First Filipino Saint Art Competition for Lorenzo Ruiz: First Filipino Saint. The 1978 painting was later presented to Pope John Paul II and is now part of the Vatican Museum collection. In 2009, he garnered the main prize at the Freedom to Create Prize in London. During the celebration of National Arts Month in 2021, he was conferred Gawad Bagong Biswal by the NCCA National Committee on Visual Arts. Salvosa has held at least 28 solo shows, participated in 61 group exhibitions, and eight international shows. He is the president of Agos Kulay Manila, the Watercolor Society of Manila founded in 1992.

With influences from Western Italian Renaissance and Asian Zen Buddhism, styles ranging from modern abstract to classical figuration, and subjects covering breastfeeding Filipinas to Philippine history, Salvosa typifies the eclectic artist. In the collection of the Bulwagan ng Dangal University Heritage Museum are his works Dumating Na (2000), My Guardian Angel (2007), Female Ballerina (2014), and a cruciform metal sculpture (n.d.). All demonstrate his proficiency in various media as well as his concerns with the environment, women, and spirituality.
