In his today's talk at the NMP-Bicol titled Under Mayonโs Shadows: Christianization and the Emergence of Albayโs Colonial Landscape (1572โ1898), it examines how Spanish evangelization reshaped the social, cultural, and physical environment of Albay from the late sixteenth century to the end of colonial rule. Framed within the dynamic setting of Mayon Volcano, the study traces the establishment of mission settlements, the role of religious orders in consolidating colonial authority, and the reorganization of indigenous communities into reducciones. It highlights how churches, roads, and town centers became enduring markers of a new colonial landscape, while also revealing patterns of local adaptation, resistance, and resilience. By situating Christianization within both environmental and historical contexts, the paper offers a nuanced understanding of how faith, power, and geography intersected in shaping Albayโs identity during the Spanish period.
