The annual celebration of Arts Month pays tribute to our nation's remarkable artistic heritage, rich cultural diversity, and the creative excellence of the Filipino people. This year, the National Museum of the Philippines-Kabayan highlights a masterpiece from the indigenous people of Kabayan.

These are the mummified cats from the collections of the late Mayor Florentino S. Merino, an Ibaloi scholar and leader during his time. The information presented alongside these preserved cats indicates that it is customary for elderly, unmarried women to have one of their pets mummified, typically their cat, upon their passing. This tradition aims to provide companionship in the afterlife, alleviating feelings of loneliness. While some may view this custom as folklore worthy of further study, it irrefutably demonstrates the exceptional skills and artistry of the indigenous people of Kabayan. This practice is another testimony to their deep love and concern for their deceased loved ones, ensuring their well-being is honored even in death.

These invaluable pieces have been presented to the NMP-Kabayan with the trust that the NMP-Kabayan is the appropriate institution to preserve them with the utmost care and in a suitable environment.

We encourage you to join us at the National Museum of Kabayan to witness the artistry and craftsmanship of our ancestors. Our doors are open seven days a week.

These phrases summarize the successful mental health workshop entitled โ€œExpress to Heal: Nurturing Mental Health through Creativity,โ€ conducted by the National Museum of the Philippines-Kabayan on February 24, 2026, at Ballay Integrated School, through the full funding of the LGU-Kabayan Tourism Office.

The workshop used art, color, and shape to help participants express emotions and understand mental health. It addressed emotional transitions from adolescence to adulthood, stress management, and common student stressors, such as exam anxiety, familial pressure, low self-esteem, grief, bullying, and social media's impact. Participants learned about the link between stress and anxiety or depression. Tools for managing mental health included interpreting emotions through shapes and colors, and engaging in mindful drawing, practicing presence, and non-judgmental observation. The Resource Person (RP) emphasized self-care practices like proper rest, a balanced diet, physical activity, visual journaling, and open conversations to reframe negative thoughts.

Discussions on resilience and empathy, along with healthy coping mechanisms such as active listening and support, were central to the workshop. Role-playing exercises reinforced these concepts. The facilitator shared key insights: 1) Emotions are a natural aspect of life; it's okay to feel stressed or confused. 2) Effective stress management is possible with healthy strategies. 3) Everyone has unique strengths; no one is solely defined by their challenges. As a pastor, the RP urged participants to seek divine guidance in all circumstances, emphasizing the importance of prayer and surrendering their concerns to the Almighty. (1st Peter 5:7)

Educators expressed gratitude for the workshop, recognizing its timely relevance in addressing mental health challenges. The workshop was attended by 36 Grade 9 students.
