The Stillness of Becoming
Solo Exhibition by Cholo Cardenas

“There is something in these trees that seems to grow in its own quiet nature, decomposing perhaps, yet continuously forming and evolving through branching structures as light reflects across the mountain landscape.”

Opening reception this April 24, 2026 | Friday | 5PM - onwards

About the Artist:
Cholo Cardenas examines the relationship between humans and nature, the real and the imagined, being and thought, and life and death. Through organic abstraction, he explores the complexities of biformity, creating hybrid entities that exist in a constant state of transformation. He graduated cm laude and received the Outstanding Thesis Award at the University of the Philippines Diliman. He has held solo exhibitions at West Gallery and Vinyl on Vinyl Gallery, exhibited his work in Tokyo, Japan, and actively participates in group exhibitions in the Philippines.

Exhibition will run till May 12, 2026.

The Shape of Silence

In The Shape of Silence, the figure dissolves into shifting planes of light and shadow where silence takes on form and presence...fragmented yet composed, she hovers between appearance and disappearance, an echo suspended between thought and emotion. The work reflects the fragile threshold where the visible meets the internal, turning stillness into a quiet geometry of introspection.

The sea has always connected the Philippines and Japan. For centuries, its shifting tides have carried people, traditions, and ideas from one shore to another. More than a border, the sea is a bridge, a reminder that identity, like water, is never still.

Across Currents brings together Filipino painters and sculptors in Tokyo, with each work shaped by memory, migration, and imagination. Some carry fragments of home: the warmth of the tropics, the weight of history, and the rhythm of everyday life. Others lean toward what is still to come, offering visions that extend beyond borders. Together, these works gather into a tide in motion, converging here in this city of crossings.

The exhibition invites us to see painting and sculpture as currents in their own right: alive, restless, and transformative. A canvas may recall the horizon between sea and sky. A carved form may embody both the stillness of belonging and the pull of departure. A brushstroke, a contour, a surface, each becomes a way of tracing what it means to live between places, to hold memory while reaching forward.

To move across currents is to be shaped by encounters, by forces greater than ourselves, and by the possibility of connection. It is also to recognize that beauty often arises not from fixed identities, but from what happens in the space between.

In this sense, Across Currents is not an exhibition about distance but about relation, about how painting and sculpture, like the sea itself, carry us toward one another.

Obscura: Portraits in Reversal

To turn away is not to retreat — it is to reframe. In "Obscura: Portraits in Reversal," the figure resists the familiar grammar of portraiture. Faces are absent, withheld, or erased - not through concealment, but through refusal. What remains are napes, crowns, and the back-curves of heads suspended in quiet space. They face the unseen; we are left behind. Rendered in both artist's contemporary language of shadow and restraint, these works dwell in a place where identity is neither performed nor confirmed. In reversing the portrait, they also reverse the gaze — interrupting the long-standing contract between viewer and subject, eye and face, presence and recognition. Here, intimacy is indirect. Narrative dissolves. The viewer is denied the usual cues: expression, context, emotional legibility. Yet what is left - the weight of posture, the gesture of turning — speaks with its own atmospheric depth. Each figure becomes a site of mystery, dislocation, and sovereignty.

There’s a certain kind of beauty that doesn’t shout to be seen — it simply waits to be felt. Whispers of Grace brings together the work of three young contemporary artists who each, in their own way, have found meaning in the quiet, the natural, and the peaceful.

This exhibition is a gentle invitation to slow down…to breathe…to take in the calm found in soft landscapes, delicate forms, and fleeting moments. The artists here are not trying to overwhelm; they’re offering stillness. Through their work, they explore how nature speaks — sometimes in silence, sometimes in subtle color, and often in the spaces between things. It’s art that feels like a deep exhale.

Whispers of Grace is about what you see — it’s about what you feel. It’s a moment to reconnect with the softer side of life, and to be reminded that even in a noisy world, there’s still quiet beauty all around us.

"Hybrid is a celebration of artistic rebirth, of meeting new challenges in one’s art and life. It is an invitation to see one’s life ripe with the possibility of transformation, of clarity and change despite the challenges one faces. It also emboldens us to see the world afresh, just as Cortez has done over the years, in response to how we become more of who we are meant to be." — Ren Aguila
