Bonnie and Clyde
(The infamous outlaws of the Great Depression era)
1.) Early Life:
Bonnie Parker (1910-1934)
Born in Rowena, Texas, grew up poor, married at 16 to Clyde Barrow's friend, Roy Thornton. Worked as a waitress, loved poetry and writing. Feisty, charismatic, and poetic. She wrote poetry and letters to friends, showcasing her creative side. Some say she was the brains behind the brawn.
Bonnie's Driving Skills
- Legend has it Bonnie was a skilled driver, helping the gang evade capture. Some accounts say she was a getaway driver during robberies.
Clyde Barrow (1909-1934)
Born in Telico, Texas, grew up poor, had a troubled youth with petty crimes. Worked various jobs, including as a mechanic. Charismatic, reckless, and loyal. He had a troubled past and a penchant for guns. Some describe him as a natural leader, while others saw him as reckless.
Clyde's Obsession with Guns
- Clyde loved guns, especially his favorite pistol, a .38 Columbo. He even had a custom-made saxophone-shaped pistol grip.
2.) Meeting and Crime Spree:
1930 - Bonnie and Clyde meet, start affair. Clyde's already involved in petty crime.
1932 - Clyde's brother Buck joins and they become a notorious trio. They start robbing stores and gas stations. First known murder in Dallas.
1933 - Buck's wife Blanche joins, and they hit banks. Gang grows, commits multiple murders.
1934 - Bonnie and Clyde become America's most wanted, with a $1,000 reward. Escape from prison, kill more.
The Barrow Gang
- Included Buck Barrow (Clyde's brother), W.D. Jones, and Henry Methvin.
Crime Partners
- Committed at least 9 murders, numerous robberies, and prison breaks.
Bonnie's Poem
- Wrote "The Story of Bonnie and Clyde", a ballad about their exploits.
Media Frenzy
- Newspapers dubbed them "America's Robin Hood", fueling their notoriety.
3.) Death Ambush:
Lawmen, led by Frank Hamer, set a trap in Bienville Parish, Louisiana on May 23, 1934. They were ambush and shot by a police. Bonnie had 23 gunshot wounds and Clyde had 17 gunshot wounds.
4.) Legacy:
Bonnie and Clyde chemistry was undeniable. They become folk heroes to some, notorious outlaws to others. Inspired countless movies, books, and songs. Remain infamous icons of the Great Depression era.
