Celebrate International Museum Day 2026 with the UP Manila Museum of a History of Ideas as we invite you to enrich our pride of place on Ermita.

Before WWII, Ermita was an exclusive, upscale residential district and a vibrant center of education and science. While the war left the district in ruins and displaced its community, the memory of the place remains latent but powerful.

Following this year’s global theme from the International Council of Museums - ICOM, "Museums Uniting a Divided World," we are using artifacts and reconstructed heritage to build bridges. By remembering where we started, we foster the unity and understanding needed to heal social and historical divides.

The University of the Philippines (UP) Manila Museum of a History of Ideas witnessed one of the highlights of the 2026 Flores De Mayo Festival, the UP Manila Santacruzan, which was a vibrant showcase of “PagbaBAYBAY sa SariBuhay,” where culture and biodiversity blossomed as one.
The event was organized by UP Manila Museum of a History of Ideas and The Faura Project, in partnership with Motivo, Ang Tagamasid UP Manila, UP Manila Salinlahi, and UP Manila College of Arts and Sciences Freshmen, Shiftees, and Transferees Council.

𝗢𝘂𝗿 𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗶𝘀 𝗿𝗼𝗼𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗶𝗻 𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝘀𝗲𝗮𝘀.🌊

In celebration of National Heritage Month, the UP Manila Museum of a History of Ideas, in partnership with The Faura Project and the UPM College of Arts and Sciences, is proud to present the 2026 International Flores de Mayo Festival and Conference.

Our theme this year, "Roots Beneath the Waves," shifts the spotlight from the gardens on land to the breathtaking biocultural heritage of the Philippine Deep. ✨

On May 5, 2026, our guest speakers shared their knowledge and perspectives on mangroves, connecting our maritime history with conservation.

The event featured a distinguished lineup of experts, opened by the conference convener, Dr. Honey Libertine Achanzar Labor, who expounded on this year’s Flores de Mayo Festival and conference theme. This was followed by an inspirational message from Dr. Ma. Teresa de Guzman, Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences. Our Keynote Speaker, Dr. Rollon, took us on a deep dive into the world of Philippine Mangroves, while Ms. Eunice Gianan of the National Museum emphasized their vital role in our ecosystem. We also gained an international perspective from Dr. Derek Monteiro, who shared insights on the Sacred Groves of India as spaces where ecology and religion meet. The intellectual journey continued with Museum Director Dr. Honey Libertine Achanzar-Labor, who unpacked the fascinating biocultural heritage of the Pandanus plant.

Thank you to everyone who joined us with curiosity and passion. Together, we are discovering that our identity is rooted not just in our soil, but in our seas. ✨

Last Monday on May 5, 2026, Asst. Prof. Jessalyn Basco led an engaging art workshop, teaching participants the techniques to master the medium of acrylics. Together, we captured the delicate beauty of the Nilad flower while reconnecting with the historical roots of Manila’s namesake.

Manila was once a land of mangroves, tidal flats, and seagrass beds, a "soft" shoreline that breathed with the tides. Today, much of that history is hidden beneath concrete and reclamation.

The 𝐔𝐏 𝐌𝐚𝐧𝐢𝐥𝐚 𝐌𝐮𝐬𝐞𝐮𝐦 𝐨𝐟 𝐚 𝐇𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐲 𝐨𝐟 𝐈𝐝𝐞𝐚𝐬 in collaboration with the 𝐏𝐡𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐩𝐩𝐢𝐧𝐞 𝐁𝐨𝐭𝐚𝐧𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐥 𝐀𝐫𝐭 𝐒𝐨𝐜𝐢𝐞𝐭𝐲 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐅𝐚𝐮𝐫𝐚 𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐣𝐞𝐜𝐭 proudly and creatively presents, "Roots Beneath the Waves: A Marine Flora Exhibition” which invites you to look closer at the greenery that guards our shores. Through the lens of botanical art and historical research, we explore the ecological challenges facing our bay and the "double gyre" of our river systems.
